mmm , quandry time. Have ADSL at the moment at home & it's all working sweetly. Moving at the end of the month, and the new place has an option of either DSL or cable.

Keeping the DSL means I don't have to do much apart from & cease and reprovide, but it means I will be tied to 512/256 .

Swapping to Cable means venturing into the unknown ( well, a bit ) & I'll need a fixed i/p address to get into work - which I get at the moment, but it does mean I could possibly get a 1meg line.

Line is up 7x24 as I just leave the firewall on...

Any ideas people ?

Steve

If its telewest cable, i would urge you to swap now.... As they have just announced they are upgrading residential customers to 1mb service FREE!!! forget NTL, they stink of **** and are about to fold up!!.... as for BT broadband, my mother uses demon ADSL (through BT) and has very little problems with it, although marginally slower and about 3quid per month more expensive for 512kb...... my advice is 1mb from telewest

The upgrade to 1Mb is not Free in terms of subscription cost, it is an additional £10pcm

If you are moving to a telewest area and are going to their cable modem service, I don't believe that you are allowed to get a fixed IP from them as a residential user, I was talking to them about this just yesterday(blueyonder) with regards to getting one of our sales guys in Halifax onto us via citrix and through the firewalls. They told me Dynamic IP only, suppossesdly cycling the IP's every 24-48 hours.
I enquired about the Business user version (Telewest) and that does have the facility for a fixed IP @£10pm on top of the £109 for the business class cable modem service. Sure, you get a better modem/firewall and potentially better upload rates along with a 7:1 contention ratio, but at the cost of £120 pm!

If you are going into a Telewest/Blueyonder area, then I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Nick

Why don't you get two cable lines and load-balance them or a cable and dsl line and load-balance that, or dsl and ISDN.... the options are endless

Cheers guys ..

I don't suppose anyone's using a VPN ( specifically checkpoint's ) over cable ? - might be a way round the issue.

I work for TW and all I can say is the 1 Mb service is great. You talk about speed, yes it's fast I've seen downloads around 120 k/b sec. That's flat out. I've seen this over a wireless link to a laptop walking around a garden

As for the static IPs, well if you really need one then pay for one. DHCP usually means on our network that your IP will stay the same for week, if not months. Unless serious router work is performed like UBRs reconfigured, etc.

Cheers Phill C

Latency isn't really a problem on the TW network

Hey - does TW have latency guarentees or SLA's for Europe and transatlantic ? - or as usual does the service decline over time/subscribers added ??

If your using a VPN client (SecureRemote etc)then you don't need a static address to get into work. If your using a VPN device (SonicWALL etc) then as long as you use aggresive mode you can still use dynamic addressing for Home to Work...What you can't do is get to your home device from work via a VPN tunnel.

Question

Babber, can you get a fixed IP address allocated to a blueyonder home cable account then?

Cheers,

Jeff , I don't need the static address for vpn, a static address would just mean I can open up the firewalls and not require the vpn.

Looks like I will go for a 1 meg blueyonder line....
