If that doesn't work, go back to Plan A.

Kick it, kick it hard, really hard, til bits start flying out of the box. Then jump up and down on it . . . . lots.

I guarantee you'll have far more fun doing this than trying to fix it

I need a coffee

This isnt one of my ickle questions for once.

My other PC down stairs tends to hang a lot slow when running things, from IE to MS word.

Im thinking its possibly the hard drive, my friend says possibly the ram. He gave me a test to run and came up no errors.

What could it be?

Any idea's welcome

thanks

Simon

Listen to what the hard disk is doing. If it is thrashing constantly and taking longer than it used to to run things then it may be on the way out.

Make sure you back up your user files now if you are concerned about it !! I lost a HDD 2 weeks ago along with 11gig of divx and software files that i was planning to move to the other hard disk

I would suggest if you are punching it...

1) that you dont as it will hurt, and hard disks dont like shocks.
2) You remove all cards connections, processor(s), memory and re-seat all these.. Ensure that the processor heatsink and fan is sat firmly on the processor and working correctly..
3) ensure all vents are clear on the case and it has good airflow through the case... I would assume that its a desktop and not a tower otherwise you would be kicking it..

4) Are the lights working? and Do you have the box?

Worth adding in some new thermal grease as well possibly.

If the Fan on the heatsink isn't working properly it will overheat and cause lockups.

Just make sure you have kept the box!

eh?

do you mean that a lad at uni told you its bad to run that?

If you have just installed I would say are all your drivers / hardware on the hcl, if not we cant support you

if they are then I would bet its the hardware.

winamp takes up alot of cpu resource, so thats no surprise. However onboard sound is usually sh1te, so if u can disable it n use a PCI soundcard it would probably help.

Failing that could jus be the OS getting screwy, so try a fresh install

yeah onboard sound is sh1te, disable it. if ya harddrive is going all the time its not almost full? what you got there now? 60gb? is your temp directory full, not using the same temp file for graphic packages are you? it will make it all slower if you do
