Scarily enough, my missus paid £29 for a Lexmark Z13 from jungle. Not photo-quality, you understand but great VFM for occasional printing and for producing her dissertation documents. Seperate colour & b/w cartridges help on the running costs too.

Manufacturers realise (surprise surprise) that ppl only intend buying one printer. Therefore they flog the printer at almost nil profit (or in some cases a loss) and make their money on selling the consumables (namely the ink) that will have to be bought time after time.
Ok so some ppl will then buy generic copy cartridges or mess around with refill kits, but my guess is this will be less that 10% of all purchasers.
Generally speaking, the cheaper the printer to buy, the higher the cost of cartridges - and beware when comparing cartridge prices as the volume of ink per cartridge varies significantly between different cartridges - even those from the same manufacturer.
