several hard disks failing over a few months...
#1
Hi!
We've had (what appear to be) 4 hard drive failures within 3 months at my place of work (around 250 pc's).
All Fujitsu, about 1 or 2 years old, co-incidence?
The symptoms are as follows :
-when the pc is turned on, they occasionally fail to boot from h/d, they are not autodetected.....if i go straight into the bios and autodetect, then save, then reboot, this sometimes works.
-when running windows, blue screen appears with error along the lines of 'Cannot read C:' etc etc, has to be rebooted.
-ran virus check, nothing shown. Ran scandisk, again nothing.
Puzzled. I suspect a virus. Also changed most components and tried the h/d in another machine and it's the same.
Any ideas appreciated.

Could it be the battery that maintains the BIOS settings is worn out?
Often, if you leave a PC plugged into the (live) mains, the battery is not required, but if completely switched off they will start to drain! Lifetime varies, but could easily fail in a couple of years!

Disk fail its a fact of life. With most disk the MTBF is high enough to not see any disk failures for the life of a PC (3-5 years). From the number of machines you have one disk failing every couple of month is not unusual IMHO.
Are all the disks the same size / module / age? If so its possible you have a bad batch.

Funny how Fujitsu have pulled out of the IDE market and now concentrate on SCSI.
Also they dont like dealing with the public with their 3 year warranties.
Dave.
Check out my webshop, special deals this week on all harddrives.

we have had 1 to 2 HDD fail a week?!!
all Fujitsu Seimans
they had shipped 10,000 of thes bloody things last year!!
call your supplier at see if the PC's were shipped with the HDD
its the Bearings on the HDD that are failing..some fail within months others fail within a year!the supplier will give you an extra years warranty covering just the HDDS
hopes this helps

We have had loads of problems with disks company that has just sold up. They were failing within three months and we are not talking one or two but thousands. A few were taken for to find the root cause. Turns out objects (dust) was found within the drives causing them to fail early. A lot of our customers no longer will accept disks from this manufacture.
Whatever happened to solid state disks?
