My Dad has just got a Viglen Laptop (Second Hand). It is installed with Windows 95.
My Dad has got a windows 98 se upgrade disk but it refuses to install. It will show a message saying setup is the wrong type and you need an upgrade disk.
It has an ati rage lt pro graphics card, Crytsal soundfusion card, and a synaptics touchpad. The drivers are installed and I do not want to loose them. I have a pc to pc link cable, I was hoping to use this to transfer the driver software, but it will not connect to my home computer (a Time)
Has anyone got any ideas on how to get 98se to install or my pc to pc cable to stay connected?
I am quite new to computers so a simple explanation would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Martin.

Buy XP, stick the CD in, boot it up, let it build.
Sit back, light ya pipe and admire ya handywork
I wouldn't bother upgrading if I were you. Always better to reinstall m8, it'll be less agro in the end.

mega_stream - that is a v.helpful reply
basically you have the cd for machines without windows installed, you need the upgrade copy.
If you do a search, you will find useful pages that tell you what to edit in a .inf file if I re-call correctly.
If you find it, or if find one before you, post it here

i would boot off the cd and choose new install, i am assuming you are botting from within windows and Microsofts excellent licensing is working its magic. The machine will run a lot faster if you choose new install and format the disk first.

My laptop has a crystalfusion soundcard and rage graphics too. I have Win98 second edition on it, it has it's own drivers for these bits and they work fine. It also does the touchpad OK. If you do have problems with drivers then you can probably get them off the web, maybe even Viglen's support website.
As someone stated earlier, better going for a clean install. If the machine is old enough to come with Win95 then you will most likely have problems with XP.

Thanks for all the info.
The Windows 98 se is an upgrade according to the box.
So how do you format the hard drive then?
Do you do it in msdos?, I have heard it is as simple as c: format.
Is this right?
Thanks again for the info.

wow... hang on a minute before you format your HDD!!!
if you got windows 98se upgrade, you wont be able to install it back into the laptop. have you got the original windows 95 cd? what is the spec of the laptop?

That's almost identical spec to my laptop, except I have 288mb of memory in there and a DVD. Windows 98 will install and run no problem on it.
Before formatting the hard disk you need to backup any files you want to keep because you will lose all your data, ensure you have the full Win98 version as well - most likely if it is the only operating system that came with your PC.
Boot from the floppy disk, Win98 Startup disk. Choose to Start Computer with CD-Rom support. When you get to the command prompt type format c: and press return. Say yes to continue and lose all data etc.
When it has completed insert your Windows 98 CD into the drive, log onto the drive (probably E: cos D: is used as a virtual drive) and type 'setup'. Press Enter and away you go.
Good luck.

Eh, me thinks me has done it now
Formatted the hard drive, that bit went ok
Changed the bios to boot from cd first. Did this after a phone call to some shop in aberdeen.
Now I have a major problem
I have used partition magic and have a 2 gig c: drive and a drive called *: with 4 gig of free space. Which windows will not write to. On start up at the bios page it says partition does not exist. I have reformatted it to FAT file system with the same result.
Has anyone got a partition program to reset the hd to 'normal'or know of a website to get such a program.
The only bit of good news is that I have managed to install windows 98se on the 2 gig section
Thanks in advance again
My amstard cpc464 was never this much trouble, and it used tapes

i would imagine partition magic would do everything for you. what version of partition magic are you using?
the standard software that comes with microsoft OS to partition HDD is fdisk.exe. it's not easy to use but will do the job for partitioning HDD.
