Just make sure you've got spec machine to run it
You will get choice to use previous Windows version or Windows 10 on start up , anyway.
And if you go for 10 you'll realise , alongside the new tiled look , you've got the same old previous Windows format at the same time

@Jay - pulling the Ethernet cable out will not stop the updates - windows will background transfer the files at any point where your machine is on-line.
You can prevent windows from upgrading to windows 10. Look at your windows updates and find KB3035583 - uninstall that update, job done - the nagware is gone.
A bit of tweaking in the registry will stop the update from being deployed.
find HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUp date
locate the entry named DisableOSUpgrade and set it to 1
Locate HLKM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Win dowsUpdate\OSUpgrade
Set the ReservationsAllowed value to 0
If you change your mind, revert the values back - but be aware if you change your mind after July 2016, the upgrade will no longer be free.

I agree.
As daft as it sounds and as much as I hated win 8.0, win 8.1 was a improvement and was usable (win 8.0 was unusable ) win 10 to me sits in between 8.1 and win7. My i7-5500U 8Gb SSD laptop certainly is not as quick on win10 as it was on 8.1 and it runs hotter (its usually fan-less).

XP was simple and still works very well.
I find Win 7 and 8 a complete pain to work with. Although 10 operates in a very similar way to those, it seems very logical to an XP stalwart like me.
There is not a single thing however that I do on my Windows 10 machine that I can't do on my XP machine.
If Microsoft still supported XP then I wouldn't think twice about running a new system with it

Yup - got it installed on my works PC. Strictly speaking GWX should not be forced on it because it is on a domain, but it is nice to have an independent check.
You can either install GWXCP or just run the EXE, but either way it is fairly unobtrusive (apart from a "10" icon in the sytem tray) - but at least it is not the malware-based one
Alledgedly you can block the auto-updates via e.g. Confirmed: How to stop Windows 10 forcing itself onto PCs – your essential guide (if you trust the horse).
More worryingly, if you do get "infected", major slurps start to occur - see Reminder: How to get a grip on your files, data that Windows 10 phones home to Microsoft
So there is NO WAY that Windows 10 will be appearing on my home PCs!

Have a look for Shutup10 from O&O software - It doesn't need to be installed, can be ran directly from your machine or removable media.
There is no guarantee that MS will not reinstate disabled functionality through its updates or windows store, or indeed add new functionality which will leak out additional information.
I have written a technical paper recently for my company about how to secure w10 within our own enterprise and for our customers. Much of this will be a step too far for home use, but I can share the relevant bits from my notes, or if you have questions just ask. For obvious reasons I can not share the whole document.
