Apple (not so) smart case
We bought our youngest an ipad (mini) for his birthday in September, along with an official apple smart case. As you might be aware, these cases aren't cheap, about £30-40 depending where you shop.
I kept catching him using the ipad without the case. Having recently dropped my, creating a small crack in one corner, I bo!!ocked him and told him to use the case because the screens are very fragile (dropped mine from a very low height)
Last week he closed the case up, next to a load of change on his bedside table. The magnetic case attracted one of the coins, causing it to crack the corner of the screen. The crack travelled right across the screen, corner to corner.
Bit p!ssed off, both the wife and I, and both kids have iPads and three of us have the smart cases.
Anyone know where I stand, re getting the screen replaced by Apple, as it was their 'smart' case that caused the damage?

No harm in trying.
But its a bit immoral, when you admit it didn't break - it was broken through negligence.
By a minor, admittedly.
Is it not a bit like asking Subsru to replace an alloy if you kerb it?

How is it negligent? I asked him to put the case on, which he did. He didn't drop it, throw it, stamp on it, just closed the case, which caused a foreign object nearby to come into contact and break the glass.
I guess I feel a little guilty, telling him to use something that is supposed to protect the screen, which happened to do the complete opposite. Just find it ironic, but I feel apple should contribute as it wouldn't have happened if it had been a non magnetic case or no case on it at all.

I think what happened is the coin became sucked in by the magnetism as my son was closing the lid, so the pressure of him closing it caused the crack.
If you go in trying to assign blame, you won't win. If you go in for a repair quote with your broken iPad and explain how it happened, bring a sorry looking child, you might leave happy.
Good call. I've been googling it and there are a fair few cases of smart cases damaging iPads, albeit by just wearing a couple of scratches on the back panel, which people have moaned to apple about, and recieved new iPads in exchange.
Save the moaning for after the visit, I'd go with a somewhat can't believe it, chance in a million attitude, they might join you in disbelief and take your side. If that fails take it on the chin, then try email, keep a good shop relationship it pays off.
2 pence piece was the culprit.

No, I think my comparison was more accurate from my impartial view, weighing up all the information you have given around the cause of your sons accident.
I obviously have a different view to you about what constitutes an accident of my own cause and how far I can blame other people for every mistake I make.
Like I said in my first ever words in response to your post...... There is no harm in trying.

You wouldn't go after Subaru if you shut your seat belt buckle in the door and damaged the door/sill. This is no different.
