Default iPhone / iTunes / MacBook probs ?

Help - young son is having problems getting the contents off his iPhone onto his MacBook Pro, problem is his iPhone is so full with the usual photos, videos , music etc that there is zero space left on it and it's has started to force close apps when trying to run them, so tried to backup the contents via iTunes onto his MacBook Pro but for some reason we are getting the message that " there is not enough storage space to enable a back up " thought this strange as his MacBook itself was very little used and he had only downloaded a few apps, a few music files , no photos or videos. checked the storage on the MacBook and it's showing around 7gb left with a massive amount used ?

so okay does the memory off what's on the iPhone fill the MacBook ie. both being iTunes ? totally confused by it all and need to find a way to transfer the contents off his phone to the MacBook and get things off his phone to free up some much needed memory !

also obviously need to know how this does not happen again ?

anyone help me out with this ? would be much appreciated keep the young lad happy again !!

Not familiar with apple files system. Can't you just access the drive and drag the files onto your pc hence cresting space.

Whatever you do don't take it near an apple store

He needs to delete things from his iPhone, if you back up to the Mac then you just have a backup that's too big as well.

These steps should help http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/iph...-ios9-3524712/

It will be stating that the iPhone is full, it needs a bit of wriggle room to back up.
