PC Rebuild or Buy Another One
I need a new PC as mine is now driving me mad as it's so slow. My PC was built for Windows XP about 10 years ago, but I've kept it running by upgrading memory and a few other bits. I can either buy a laptop or rebuild this desktop. I need something for general use, fast enough with decent graphics for watching Moto GP via BT Sport etc and running Windows 7 or 8 with Office 2010 etc. I'm thinking Intel i3 or may be i5 as the processor.
Would I save anything by rebuilding my desktop to a decent spec instead of buying a bare bones PC do you think?
Thankjs

I'd start from scratch and build a new one, your current one is 10 years old so will always be slow and dated.
For components you can buy from places like AV forums, lots of people on there are always changing the spec of their PC's so you'll get the components a lot cheaper than new, a lot have the original receipt and quite a few things for sale are brand new.
An SSD is a must, i'd go for an i5 if you can stretch to one, the ivybridge 3570K is a good cpu, personally i wouldn't bother with Haswell.
Obviously get the best GPU you can afford, just make sure whatever power supply you plan to use can run it depending on what sort of GPU setup you go for.

Sounds like it is heading towards a new system. I'd like to do the rebuild and did have a mate who I watched rebuilding a couple of PCs, but time is a bit limited due to pressure of work (and keeping two cars going). Thanks for the advice though and any links or sites to buy from instead of PC World etc would be appreciated so I can avoid crapware.
Cheers

Hi there
As above I would go with new build, its not worth it to put more money to this PC
Usually I would choose best, but if budget is tight, then I would go with:
X58 motherboard(Asus P6T,if you will find EVGA SR2 take it) used cost around £100
X5670(6 core/12 threads) used cost around £70-£100
12GB RAM £60
SSD(MX100 512GB) £120
Good CPU cooler(Thermalright HR02,Noctua is you feel flash or Cryorg R1 Ultimate) £45 onwards
PSU(750W Modular PSU) £60 onwards
GPU(R9 285 or 290) £120-£200
Case(Coolermaster) £45
This PC should last bit longer,I've got very similar spec and my is running 4.2GHz(in colder weather I do run bit more vCore and can push 4.6GHz) OC on 24/7 day basis, this PC should cost lot less than Ivy-Bridge or SB etc. and this PC will be match for newer i7-5820K in most cases if they're OC to 4.2GHz or gains on 5820k will be marginal in most cases
Hope this helps
Thanks,Jura
In total this shouldn't cost

FWIW, I've built : FX8350 with 16 gig Ram on a Asus Sabertooth board, with ATI R9 270x. Storage is SSD Samsung EVO 850 (system 1tb) and 3 tb of drive space. Controllers include a 360 controller, my old Saitek Cyborg 3D and a Logitech G27 for my racing.
The box is a coolermaster K350 and the CPU is an Arctic Freezer 13.
It's capable of running pretty much anything I throw at it (so far)....... and it was built on a budget. Circa £600.

This is brilliant stuff. Thanks Jura, ScoobyDoo555 and the rest of you. Yes the case gets hot with fan on constantly from April to Sept (plus I clean it all out regularly).

I would personally upgrade case too,I would go with Coolermaster case,I've used only them and they're been best,in my case(Coolermaster HAF X) my temps are on idle around 30's and on full load during the rendering with V-RAY I see max temps around 55C and that's on air and my CPU is overclock'd to 4.4GHz most of the time and my GPU(R9 290 TRI-X is overclock'd to 1150/1500) temps are on idle 38C and on full load around 70C and again this is on air,no watercooling etc.R9 290 running bit hotter than any other GPU,but with right case and in my case I've never been worried about the temps
Hope this helps
Thanks,Jura
