Greg,
have a read up on the different DVD formats - there is DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM etc. Make sure to get a drive that suits your purpose.
Also, bear in mind that the disks are still quite expensive at the moment, although i am sure that they will drop in price over time. The best value so far seems to be Apple (for DVD-Rs) at GBP17 (plus VAT and postage) for 5 disks. See http://www.apple.com/uk/thestore/.

I have a Pioneer A03 drive and it's pretty cool.Tis a DVD-R format writer! (Cost me £300 at xmas from PC World and was gettin the best write ups at the time!!!)
Unbranded DVD-R disks are now at 99p with the likes of TDK and Verbatims around the £4 mark
Nick
P.S: Ideal for PS2 games hmmm hmmm
Forgot to say,it's a CDR too (8x write) DVD is 2x write

Hi
Hewlett Packard have just released their their DVD200i product
DVD 2.4x rewrite, 8x read
CD 12x write, 10x rewrite, 32x read
DVD+RW, DVD+R, CD-RW and I think CD-R
Their are equivalent products from Philips and others but they are much the same. If I recall correctly the software bundle is better on the HP drive.
Hope this helps

Greg,
i would suggest that you look at http://www.hp-expo.com/uk/eng/produc...r/dvd200i.html but your company firewall might block access
Duzzunt seem to do DVD-Rs - is this a problem?

great questions then!!
I would want to use it for:
a) backing up my PC/laptop - I can get around 5gb per DVD - correct?
b) writing DVDs that I create from my digital camcorder. I would want them to play on my PS2 - is that possible?
c)I have some stuff I created into MPEG from the camcorder and also the source I downloaded from the camera which is around 10GB of raw AVI- can I write these onto DVD using a writer? Thinking that keeping the DV tapes isn't a good idea for long term storage.
any other tips?

B) No problems. I have transcoded DV format to full DVD format, and plays in DVD player. You will need transcoded software for this though.
C) No problems.
At present all DVD writers, will only write at a MAx of 2x (this is equivalent to a 8x CDR writer, in comparison times for writing). BUT, will only write at MAX speed on certified branded discs (the firmware will only recognise certain types). Unfortunately, these blanks are more expensive than others (about £3.50 each, as opposed to other good brands of £2.00 each). All others will only write at single speed. For a FULL recognised disc, it will take about 30mins (2x), for a FULL other disc it will take about 1hr (1x).
To take advantage of using massive images, you must use WINDOWS2000 or WINDOWS XP operating systems (both using NTFS), otherwise ANY image over 4GB WILL NOT be recognised.
The pioneer drives are VERY reliable. I have burnt over 30 DVD's, with no coasters.
Any other questions/issues, please ask.
Regards,
Shaun.
