Default Sony Hacked, might be 3 weeks

Wow! Apparently the defacement was at a desktop level, all across Sony's internal network. That's somewhat awesome but isn't going to be fun clearing up.

Wasn't this all because of some film that Sony made about an assassination plot against the North Korean leader.

And now they have agreed not to release it. Dictatorship wins again.

This turned out to be way bigger than I thought it was going to be when I posted the thread and I knew it was large scale.

That's the easy bit, a parting shot. Getting into and around the network and not being spotted while you download terabytes, that was tricky I'm sure.

Sure, the network monitoring is not as good as it should be - but I would have thought there is a far amount of network traffic moving around Sony's network

I just question that the media portray it as the "Hollywood" view I.e Neo from the Matrix tapping away at a remote console, discovering some unknown "hole" in layer upon layer of security devices that allows them into the network

Probably a bit of social engineered malware being put on machines allowing some sort of remote access - encrypted traffic over 443 difficult to spot

group policy change desktop wallpaper, it's easy for someone inside....but if they did it from outside then diff matter, they would need domain admin or such like privileges to change the policy...

A colleague of mine whose wife works at Sony Pictures said they are investigating internally at the possibility that the hack was introduced from a USB key.

I think North Korea are bricking it as they're now offering to help with a joint investigation with the US.
