Default ultra res monitors

I'm tempted to buy one but with 1080p being so cheap is it worth paying the extra cash out for a good dpi screen? I have just bought a good gpu and I'm tempted to twin/sli it so I will need a 4k res monitor for to get the best out of both or should I stick with one.

At what point can the human eye not differentiate 1080 2k 4 resolution. I would suggest only when the screen size becomes massive.

You can tell up to 1200x1600 on a 19" screen - I know as I still have my Hitachi CM721F CRT in the corner, and resolution-wise it blows away most mainstream LED/LCD screens as it has a 0.2 dot pitch pixel density as well as near instant response. The only reason I don't use it much is because its so damn huge in depth, so it takes up most of the desk (even though its a 19" screen).

IMO 1080 belongs on TVs, it should never have been adopted for PC use.

PC graphics cards and CRT monitors have been able to surpass that easily for the best part of 15 years. And 1080 being used for TV panels has held back mainstream demand and monitor development.

Its only now that 3d, Retina and 4K are being adopted that finally computers are moving forward in resolution and response after being stuck for the past five to six years at a pathetic 1920x1080 resolution with artificial (jerky/blurry) panel response - not just gaming, just simply scrolling in a web browser is noticeable.

I currently "make do" with a Dell U2414M that's only 1920x1200 and 0.27dot pitch, it can now be had for a little over £200 - which I think is a bargain. IMO that is the minimum standard for a PC as its not a true IPS screen (E-IPS with 6-bit colour). However, I'm yet to lie eyes on a lower resolution TN panel that comes close to this screen.

I have both owned andused 720, 728, 800, 1024, 1050, and 1080 line panels and they all are left wanting on anything larger than 17" when sat at 1 metre from the screen IMO (one reason why I hated laptops for long term use as many mainstream ones are just 720 or 728 lines, even in 17", which should be 1080 minimum IMO).

I've noticed the Samsung U28D590D is showing up at under £400 at some outlets (maybe dubious) and the Dell UP2414Q is showing up at under £500, so I think I maybe due for an upgrade to a 4K monitor soon....its been a very long time comming.

IMO the more lines, the better, especially as LCD have been severely limiting the market choice for the past ten years.

The problem with the new 4K PC monitors is its going to cost you around £700 - £1200 to upgrade your graphics card/cards to run them, i use a 27 inch 2560 x 1440 monitor which i find is the perfect size for most things that you'll do on a pc, if you start going above 27 inch its just too big to be sat in front of.

I've been looking into this a little more and found Dell do a 4K 28" which can be pre-ordered for £450....the P2815Q

DON'T BUY IT until you are aware of its spec limitations.

First its a TN panel. Not the end of the world, but thats one reason why its cheap.
Second and more importantly...it only has a 30hz refresh. That is very poor.

It'll be ok for desktop stuff (once you've scaled up the icons ), but anything moving isn't going to be great.

The 30hz refresh is a interface limitation, so it may affect other monitors in the same price bracket, so look carefully at the specs.

Personally i wouldn't, what happens if something went wrong with it as the place you'd be buying it from is in South Korea.

This is my monitor as I have had it for 8 years, apart from the resolution is there reason I should upgrade it given my new gpu is an r290?
