machine polishing is the only real way for the colour & depth/shine to be restored.
I do my cars/family/friends myself & have done for years.
I had a red golf before coming back to scoobs that had the same issue, but german paint seems a lot harder to work on than any other, but polishing did help & make it stay glossy red a lot longer.
I found that my subaru paint was very swirly, so i only need a fine cutting polish that will help to eliminate the fine marks & swirling. As for faded paint, still not a very strong polish is needed as the paint is easy to work on (do not want to burn through the paint) this will get rid of the dead/faded pink paintwork & start bringing it back to life. Then a finer polish is used etc & then sealant then wax to top it off & to protect it.
As mentioned though, claybar is required first.
There are a huge array of polish's etc by many companies & over time you get a combo togther you like that works, but also every paint job is different!
I find 3m pads to be the best i have ever used, & use their 3m 'yellow' polish. Other companies are bilthamber autoclay as only water required as a lube & it works really well & alot of bar for your money. Autobright also do a good polish called 'Top Line' & 'foam pad polish' they are a good combo on my scoob, followed by Naviwax.
heres what top line & foam pad polish did on just the first session on me scoob both 50/50 polshed shots:
here is me old golf (1998 plate) after a good machine polishing/waxing before selling it, so it can be done
an an old school xr4i i did for a mate a while ago
-washed/prepped ready for polish (pink :-) )
finished -

I've got a 53 plate reb blobeye, seems like the paint is ageing differently depending on the panel. The doors still look great, the rear quarters look pinkish, as do the wing mirrors and the scoop has some serious paint issues (I've posted a thread on Detailers World about it).
