would the clay get oil residue out of white paint

Clay probably won't remove oil residue: it may reduce it if it's on the surface of the paint but I'm not sure if it'll remove it.
To remove it, a strong degreaser like Meguiar's Super Degreaser: http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acata...degreaser.html would be best.
