Default Engine Bay - should it be done?

Hi all

I have just teken delivery of my MY07 WRX SL and was wondering whether the protective wax around the engine bay should really be left on. Does this actually protect the engine / items its covered from corrsion etc.?

I was going to set about the cleaning at the weekend, but could do with some advice on how much to do.

Should I just stick to the more obvious bits such are plastic, hoses and bodywork?

Thx
Nige

I left the wax on but did everything else, as I don't intend showing the car I just wanted a clean as new engine bay.Cover electrics, alternator fuse box in particular. Spray on a degreaser. Agitate then allow to dwell for a few mins. Rinse off with a low pressure hose. Drop bonnet and allow engine to tick over for 10 mins to dry. Use a MF towel to dry and excess pudles. Apply dressing of your choice (Not WD40 as some recommend) Allow 10 mins for it to dry, then wipe away any runs etc.

If you want to be a show and shine winner then yes you would need to remove it and polish all that paint work up, but if your using the car i would leave it be and just keep it clean and tidy under there, its not often any one sees the engine any way, as long as its dirt and grime free and the shuts are clean and polished IMO that would do.

Thx for the responses. I guess the wax doesn't look good as over time it attracts grime that sticks, but I wasn't sure if removing it would lead to problems.

Might just try to leave it on cast / engine items and clean all the plastic etc.

I might try to clean the alternator carefully as it also has wax on and does look a bit too grubby!

WD40 is a water displacement spray which will attract and trap dust and other airborne debris.

I'd suggest cleaning the alternator by spraying some engine cleaner on a toothbrush or similar and scrubbing it with that, and then wiping away what's left.

Also, try not not the get too much liquid arround the HT leads as this will cause the engine to miss for a bit.

WD40 is solvent based so it drys out completely the moment the engine is warm (thus totally ineffective)it also "cooks" turning black at the same time,to summerise it makes your engine dirty and protects *** all.
