You could try a product called "Jizer" made by Swarfega. It's a water rinsable parts degreaser. Just reading off the back of my can and it say's;
*Can be used to clean> Engines & motors, Vehicle Bodywork, Components & parts, Machinery & tools, Paint brushes and many floor surfaces.
Just spray on neat, leave for a few mins, brush if needed then rinse off (simple).
Hope that's the sort of thing you were after.

Minimum effort is gonna mean light use of a (clean) paintbrush try not to leave degreaser on any surface to long coz it can damage some surfaces.I've just used old fashion gunk an it dint take long, then sprayed Halfords own brand silicon spray over everythin.Better than WD40 type sprays coz it doesnt dry up and go black when yer engine gets hot. Not much can beat silicon when it comes to heat and water reistance.

Don't be a lazy bugger! For best results, I'd suggest soaking the whole bay with R222 Total Auto Wash, leaving it five minutes, then agitating everything gently with a Meguiars Slide Lock Brush before rinsing off. Using a product that is designed to be agitated generally means you are using a product that is chemically less strong... which is good for your perishable components, and also better for the environment. An illustrated guide can be found on this link...
