Are you applying by rotary or by hand? What condition is your paint in?
If you have fine swirls/ minor imperfections and are applying by hand, then Autoglym SRP is your friend. It is a cost effective one stop method of improving the look of your paintwork. Before you polish the car, I suggest you claybar it to remove bonded on contaminants such as tree sap or air borne fallout. Once you have clayed, your paint will feel as smooth as glass.
Then apply the ARP sparingly. SRP contains a lot of fillers. Applying too much will leave you with a chalky mess.
Once you have filled in your imperfections, you need a decent wax to seal your hard work with the polish. Collinite 476 is very durable and is reasonably priced. If you have a rotary , then it is very much dependant on the condition of your paintwork. The choice is massive. Applying some polishes by hand will not realise their true potential, they will not break down by hand. Make sure you use microfibre cloths as oposed to old T shirts etc to prevent scratching that paintwork. Best of luck and post some pics. Bob

A claybar is a synthetic bar of clay which you drag across your paintwork with a lubricant sprayed on first. It "pulls" the minute particles that make your paintwork feel rough off the car, leaving it clean and ready to polish.

If it's gone through to the primer (i.e. looks white and you can catch your fingernail in it) then it will need painting; nothing else will fix it. If you can't feel it with your fingernail then it should polish out; see this link for details and links to the recommended products, including the clay bar...
