What will keep tyres looking black?
Blackfire's tyre gel works well, from Polished Bliss. I've not tried the Megs Endurance Gel, but I know that is popular. Neither will fling up the side of your car. And both are clear gels that are good for your rubber, and enhance the natural colour.

As suggested above, maybe the tyres weren't clean enough, as they should absorb the gel. I've only used one coat, rather than two. Gives the matt look I'm after.
Meguiars Endurance Gel if applied correctly. Or Chemical Guys New Look Trim Gel is particularly good. This is the stuff here Chemical Guys New Look Trim Gel 16oz
The Blackfire Gel is back in stock, press CTRL+F5 if your screen is showing otherwise. As above, thin coats are best, and a good APC wash first to remove all old dressings and grime really helps in terms of the final result.
Well just to be different, i use Armorall protectant spay\cleaner, it make the rubber look really clean dark and new without making it look like some car dealership has just had done it if you know what i mean... cheap and nothing come off the tyres, give it a try... apply with a small sponge... works brilliantly
