I don't really want to state the obvious but you have got a converter to change the 240v that we run on down to 110v, and haven't just chopped the US plug off and wired a UK plug to it have you.

Never heard of this happening before, but it could just be the fact it's new. Stick with it, see how you go - could just be the grease getting warm for the first time. If it starts to make odd noises or anything else then consider the option of sending it back - not good, so fingers crossed.
