Default Site has gone back to "slow".

When trying to load a page, I'm back to waiting an age for the ads to load before it'll let me scroll down.

Any way this can be addressed? I'm OK with ads, they have their uses, and I'm even interested in SOME, but don't weant to look at the same ones every time I load a page.

I'm on broadband, 10Mb

If it is still slow, then close your browser down, and reopen it

when it slows down for me it seems to be when I have had the window open for quite a while

alcazar and 16v

Could you please report back after trying Sonic's solution. If this works it may help us diagnose the problem.

As said above, for most, the site is absolutely flying now, but it seems there is a selection of people who are finding it slower.

PS. I'm sure this is obvious, but to be clear, the "pause" has nothing to do with the ads.. it is the time it takes the server to render and deliver the main content of the page.

The reason the top comes up so quickly is that there is little or no load on the server to deliver that bit of the page (adverts included)

hoskib. As this is often a sensitive subject, I just want to be absolutely clear that you understand, so forgive me if I just haven't "got it"

I'm saying that the adverts take almost zero load and next to no bandwidth to deliver, so it doesn't matter whether they're at the top or the bottom in terms of page load performance.

The bit that takes the time to load is the content you're interested in reading, and therefore it is that bit which doesn't display instantly.

The content will always be slower to load/render etc as it is dynamic especially during the busier times due to people posting, editing, deleting etc

don't worry, sounded funny in a beer fogged head. translated to not funny at all on a sensible thread

sensitive subject so i'll back away and keep my comments to myself and let the big boys talk sense

by the way, the site is nice and quick for me. if it doesn't keep up to speed a soloution like sonics does the trick

Simon,

It's terribly hit and miss here too. Quite often it's just hanging and I close the browser which does help at times but not always.

I have a few sites open and SN is the only one affected in this way.

I'm not bothered about it but just thought I'd let you know.

Yeah, there will always be slow points which is almost unavoidable.

The search facility (for instance) causes a massive slow down at times.

But on the whole it should be fast now?

Webmaster - have a look at my thread in the ESC forum on this - whatever you have done to change things for others has bugg**ed how my set up works with SN - it's so slow it's almost down to dial up speed....

Not a happy bunny..........

BTW - closing down pages &/or SN and re-opening them doesn't do anything for me.

Are you using IE 7 ?

If so you have to completly close the browser down, not just the tabbed window

or open a brand new browser session

It doesnt always do it for me, but in the main once it hits slow motion, then it usually does the trick

Also I have noticed the tribal part of the url is the last to load, even after the thread contents, and the advert under the Scoobypedia banner is always the very last thing to load, well after the thread has, so adverts are Definatlely not an issue, at least for me

Looie

Thanks for your report.

It would be REALLY helpful if those who complained earlier in the thread would report back either way regarding Sonic's system and also Looie, if you could let us know if you are closing down all browser windows, and if not, test it and report back.

If the problem still exists, could you please give us some detailed information such as :

1) Is it slow on EVERY page, or only every now and then?
2) If not every page, does it get progressively slower?
3) If its consistent, could you please time the loading - how long until page goes white, how long until first part of page loads (what part) - how long until next, etc?
4) Could you please try using firefox to see if it is any different?

All of these things, as accurately as possible, will really help us diagnose the problem.

It would also, of course, be really helpful to find out the common factor through each of the people experiencing the problem.

Cheers

Simon

1) Is it slow on EVERY page, or only every now and then?

For me there is no specific area that goes slow, when it does happen it tends to be every page

2) If not every page, does it get progressively slower?

No not progressive for me, zips along, and then suddenly goes slow

3) If its consistent, could you please time the loading - how long until page goes white, how long until first part of page loads (what part) - how long until next, etc?

Again for me, the whole framwork loads first, then the thread content, and then lastly the banner advert (I assume this is the tribal part, if that makes sense) but I will say that sometimes the ad is slow at displaying, but at that point i'm already scrolling down reading the thread (page still loading in the task bar at the bottom)

4) Could you please try using firefox to see if it is any different?

Not got Firefox, but Donna is using IE6 and it does appear to have slightly different results than me

Also, when I went back to google and tried again, nothing
I have no idea what firefox is, therefore I don't have it

thanks guys.

But can we please be sure to keep this thread only to the speed issue detailed above?

Any other problems, please start a new thread.

In terms of the site completely going offline for a few minutes, that was an actual problem at our end.

Hello Simon, sorry not to have repiled to this before.

My findings were exactly as Sonic's.
Always the banner ad SEEMED to load last, and once it had scrolled through whatever versions of it wer there, it SEEMED to let me look at the rest of the page. hence my assertion that it was the ads causing the problem.

I'm quite happy to accept your expalnation, however, it makes more sense than mine

Yesterday wasn't TOO bad, but the day previous had been awful, with me having to constantly close the browser, and re-open it to get it to do ANYTHING: let me post, let me see another thread, move at all, load a page etc etc. It crashed twice to.

Time taken to load a page enough for me to view the thread content varies from around 4 seconds, (unusual, and often when there SEEMS to be no banner ad?), to 40 seconds or more.

Alcazar

BTW: the site DID NOT alert me of your PM Simon, but DID when I logged on again now of one from someone else, hence I found yours

LOL sorry!

OK. Removing Boolean search, and now reducing the number of people searching has improved the general load quite a bit.

Please let me know what (if any) difference there is now.

For me it loads in 2 parts now, with a delay of about 5-7 seconds before the lower half appears. The top half is instant however.

Don't take notice of that though as you might just hide the lower half for good.

To test Webmasters query to me -:

8pm ti-onight, switched PC on, looked at Yahoo (didn't open anything), clicked link to open SN - ONLY SN open, no other programmes.

Had a PM, so opened it, typed out a reply, went to review it - 2½mins later I was STILL waiting for it to display on my screen, so gave up and hit the submit button instead.

Then went into the ESC forum, opened ONE thread which then took 48 seconds to show it - as for Spoon (below) it loaded in 2 parts, with a delay of about 15-20 seconds before the lower half appears (nothing like the 5-7 that Spoon mentions). The top half with the adverts is instant however.

Then for some reason, viweing thread semed to speed up, but then after four or five threads, back to the yawn speeds.

Still nothing open but SN on my PC so no other demands on the system.

Hope that helps in some way Webby!

1 - Now and again
2 - The main forum and sub forum pages load up straight away, its the threads.
3 - As said, banner straight away (which you explained) Then I get the grey background of the thrad and can be waiting several minutes before anything comes up. Sometimes it says done and all I've got is the grey.
4 - I've tried Firefox before, its not as quick, and that goes for several sites.

Editing posts doesn't take you back to the thread afterwards either, the edit window stays.

Closing down and reopening seems to have worked for now. I also didn't get a pop up for the message!

Hi guys

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

We've got to be really careful here.

There are two distinct scenarios, and it is vital we don't mix them up.

Scenario 1) The site is perfectly fine for the majority of the time, but now and again it goes dog slow.

Scenario 2) The site is dog slow all the time. And by dog slow, I mean like 10 seconds or more to load a page.

For me, and for the majority, scenario 1 is my experience, and pages load in less than 2 seconds, except, of course, every now and then, when there is a combination of high load across the site, and the whole thing will slow down for a minute. But not for 10 minutes.

Please be clear which scenario you are talking about.

Also, even if you've tried firefox before, if you can face it, it would be great if you could give it another go. I gave up on firefox a while ago also, but lately I've found it to be quite a bit faster.

Cheers

Simon

The site is spot on during the day, but seems to get a bit slow of an evening. It used to do this a while ago. It perks up again, after about 8pm
