Just changed my oil in filter today. Millers cfs and a k and n filter

Fillter is great because it's got a nut in the end! You just screw it on!

Now question is
What's the recommended oil change millage?

I'm thinking since I'm going to be changed oil every 5k do I really need to change the Fillter? Opinions please. I'm not doing it to be cheep just for convenience

 

Change the filter every-time you change the oil, All the old **** and waste will be in there, You dont want that going back round your engine that's for sure.

Can get filter's for under a tenner so well worth it.

Also if it's a new car, can invalidate the warranty etc

 

Buy then in bulk and change it, doest take that long

I usually change oils every 2500 due to tracking a lot, but only change filter every 5K.
The filter only holds bugger all oil and is supposed to be good for 10k right?
I guess I'm an idiot.

 

The 'nut' on the end isn't for fitting it. It's to help when people overtighten the filter to get it off!!!

The filter shouldn't be much more than hand tight and absolutely NOT!! as tight as you can get it with your hand either!!!

 

Yes the filter might be good for 10k if you use long life oil which only needs changing every 10k,But the filter is what it is a FILTER and it filters all the metal crap out your engine oil.
So why would you want all that mixing with your lovely new oil.

 

So in conclusion.

Change the filter every time.

In your own words "it filters all the metal crap out your engine oil", so how all of a sudden does the filter stop working and allow all the metal to mix with the fresh oil?

Are you also saying that Millers, Motul etc aren't good for 10k miles?

I'm with Cster, I change oil 4-5 times a year and that's mainly because I track it. Oil filter every other change. Next time you change your oil at 2.5k/5k or whenever cut your filter open and take a look. The filter change or lack of it was advised to me by a very respected tuner.

Just to add I do only do about 3k a year at the very most.

 

Sorry mate but I want to prolong the life of my engine and want to do every thing to achieve that,and it doesn't involve scimping over a £10 oil filter.
and weather millers or motul or good or not for 10k I wont be waiting that long.

 

It's not the 10 quid for me. I always use fully syn Motul and do it myself to make sure it is done properly.
I just can't see the point changing the filter more than every 5K- unless the bloody things don't work

 

it will be there yes. it will still be in the fillter though. its not going to suddenly stop filtering

i did it with a quater inch wrench so its probably a bit more than hand tight. id never do something like that up anything less than as hard as i could do itr with my hand. it makes no sence

like i said. its a convenience thing. not a money saving thing.


i will cut open the oil filter and we can all have a ganders.

 

also. i have overfilled the engine a little (embarrassed much)
since this engine do sent use virtually any oil at all id rather take the excess out than wait for it to burn off (which will be ages)

anyone know how i can remove a little bit off oil without taking the sump plug out?

a little to expensive for just the one mistake lol. il just keep wipeing the dip stick. it will go down eventualy!
