Planning on building an engine to take 4/450 ish, thinking about having a set of heads built, ported and some fancy cams, valves etc.

So what i'm after is info on which heads to start with and what cams and valves to go for.

In the first instance I shall be fitting the engine into my 54 plate WRX Wagon PPP with a hybrid TD04 and then at a later date i'll stick it in my V3 Type R with a bigger turbo aiming for somewhere around 400bhp, not too bothered about numbers TBH just want it to come in hard and pull well through the range if that's possible.

I'm a virgin when it comes to heads, cams and valves so just want to know what heads would be a good starting point, or if I could just buy a cheap set of WRX heads and have everything done to them.

I'll not be doing a self build as I don't have time but i'll fit the engine myself so not interested in anything that's going to require looms/ecu to run avacs.

 

One cant be done without the other...if you see what i mean, the stock V3 heads/cams will be fine if only fitting to the type r

i would go with version 6 sti heads and refresh them with the above

My WRX heads have just run 466.6 hp/490lbs/ft.
This is on my 2.5 build which Paul Finch did for me. He worked the heads to help gas flow and used STI valves and springs in place of the WRX one's and that was it.

I'm running 460 on standard V3 STI heads cams & valves, but Paul Finch has advised me a set of Supertech valves would be wise especially if I push it any further. I think your biggest problem will be making the set up work in both cars but I think it is possible.

 

Just use the V3 STI heads?
Maybe a set of Supertech +1mm valves (Don't use their valve seals though) or even Crower. And a port and polish?.
I'm sure Enginetuner can tell you what standard V3 STI cams are good for.

* Although, will you hit a snag when it comes to HT leads/Coil packs when fitting it to the newage?

 

The easy solution would be to swap heads & manifolds when swapping from one car to the other, more work but it's probably less messing about in total.

 

Would there not then be an issue with different block connectors from a classic manifold to a newage loom?

 

What's wrong with their seals?

 

They break, well the exhaust ones do, when fitting them. I went OEM after.

 

Use the classic heads & manifold in the classic & the newage heads & manifolds in the newage. This simplifies many issues, but there are other ways of doing it, plenty of people put newage engines in classics complete with manifolds it just needs some modifications.

 

Thank's for the replies guys, I think i'll have just the V3 heads done and stay with the WRX heads for the newage, just need to sort a set of WRX heads out so i'm not p!ssing around too much mybe get paul finch to port them and put some fresh STI valves in them as above.

Doing it this way because I don't want to drive it back to uk just yet as it costsŁ700 there and back.

Any one got a set of newage WRX heads going extremely cheap/free.
