hi all,I own a version 6 classic type r sti limited,the engine is low on compression and I plan on having it rebuilt and the power upped dramatically.
If I started right now then I'd end up having either all the shiney new bits needed for the conversion to 400 bhp and a worn engine lying on the garage floor or a rebuilt engine with no clutch,ecu,turbo etc as I can't afford to do both at once.
So having a look around there's a couple of newage sti imprezas being broken with ej20 engines,that will get my car on the road this summer and allow me to buy some bits for the conversion.
My car still runs a single coil pack and the newer cars are coil on plug I think?
What's needed from a newage apart from say the bare engine minus manifolds to fit in my car?

What sort of budget do you have?

Have you considered driving yours and pottering around while a new one is being built and you can save/make more funds?

You can get a good closed deck block for around £400. Once sourced you could send that to engine tuner for it to be re built. Then when funds have been found drop off for fitting and have your own heads re done.

 

A new age sti 2 litre block is good for 450. You will have to put your heads and ancillaries on it.

 

I wouldn't bother going the cdb route unless you are going for big power and want to spend lots of moolah

 

You'd be right on the limit with 450!

The reason i mentioned the CDB route was because once you start you're forever chasing power and more mods. For only a little more money now you can get the engine you want and work from there. Or save a little bit of money and be limited with choices and options.

 

Plenty of scdb running decent power .....

 

I`ve been running 507/470 on an odb at 1.7 bar , 2.1 stroker for the last year and the engine was rebuilt 4 years ago all done properly. You should have no worries I was told 550 would be the limit.

 

Please don't think i was disregarding the open or semi blocks!

It's just at this stage of decision making the decision between the blocks prior to any work being carried out is about £100 - £200 difference.

I should clarify - Don't fall in to the trap of buying a new V9 block with "Forged pistons". These, unless stated otherwise are Subaru pistons and don't hold the capability of others.

 

A odb should be ok up to 500 bhp it depends what your target is and what bar you want to run at

 

If you only want up to 450BHP then a newage STI engine will be ideal & you can fit it complete with heads if you use an aftermarket ECU to run the AVCS. A mate of mine has just done this, JGM supplied the ECU & wiring then remapped it.

 

running it isn't an option,the engine had 2 bent valves and worn rings so I pulled it out.better catching it now and trying to save it than letting it blow up.
If I got it rebuilt I'd likely be 3k,then I still heed a turbo,intake,fluids,management,mapping,clutch,hose s and probably a few other things whereas I could pick up a decent newage engine for half my rebuild cost ready to drop in.
What's involved converting from single to coil on plug?

 

Zen performance can supply a plug and play loom to convert to single coilpacks.

I'm quite interested on this too as it would be an option for my car too. Is there. An engine that is held in a higher regard in standard spec, and then the best standard block?

 

From what i have read Closed deck blocks on early ra's are better for big power rebuilds.
If you want to run a newer avcs engine then the jdm bugeye engine is the best.
The uk sti has smaller valves and ports and restricts airflow.
That's what I have bought for mine,trying to sort management out for it which isn't pocket change.
