Default when is a front mount intercooler needed?

hi, been offered a front mount intercooler with pipework for my classic and wondered do i really need it? its recently been mapped to 275-280bhp and its going for a map tweak and dyno run next week so wondered if fitting a front mount would gain much power over the sti v3 top mount or if its really needed on my setup and worth the extra lag? ive heard sti top mounts are good for 300bhp...

To be honest mate at your power level a top mount will be fine but you will always get better cooling properties with a front mount fitted,a lot of people said that you don't get lag with a front mount fitted but when I upgraded to one and that's the first thing I felt it was only a minute change to the spool up of my car but enough for me to notice it,but for the less heat soak and the fact that I was looking more power in the near future it was a change I was prepared to put up with.SJ.

And to answer your question about the sti top mount If your talking about the newage sti top mount I was running mine at just under 400 bhp without any problems but then again my STI did have the intercooler water spray.SJ.

so since im keeping mine at this power level its not really worth me bothering, as im keeping the engine internals and gearbox standard and want to keep it safe as its my daily driver. dont want to add more lag when its not really needed but would a front mount gain any horse power with my set up if it obviously improves cooling and reduces heat soak to the intercooler?

yeah still got the standard td04 turbo, the only engine mods are an esl daughter board and map, 3 port boost solenoid, rcm 340 fuel pump, sti v3 top mount intercooler, induction kit, bov and 2.5" catback exhaust.
