Default Exhaust doing my nut in

Yeah so my new cat back is doing my head in already, it's a cobra 4.5" backbox and resonated mid section. Dunno wether it's cos it's on a wagon but it resonates in the cabin like something fierce, I love the sound of the backbox but can't get my head round why it drones considering a bung or sound proofing, any ideas? It's non turbo so don't think I'd get much power loss from a bung? Or maybe I need to get used to it, I've got a really obsessive personality and once I'm thinking about something it winds me up :/ I'm a nutter I know

Any recommendations for good makes? Or are they all much of a muchness? Also, can you push them further up the tailpipe? Thinking from an aesthetic point of view here, it's got quite a long tailpipe and I like how the 'gaping hole' looks, a bung right in the opening would look a bit weird. Or do they have to be right in the opening to work? Thanks

Its really strange, swapping exhausts is a complete pain in the ****!!

I've changed 5 times in the last 3 months!!! I bought a classic exhaust for my newage, the guy said it would fit. Which it did, but didnt match the downpipe, so was too long! I've had exhuats that fit, but the flanges to mate up, so the mechanic has had create a custom fitting. started at 2.5 went to 3, then back to 2.5 bore.

Anyway, rant over...

I've realised that some drone and some dont, the Revolution exhaust is the best exhaust i had, sounded VERY nice, and didnt drone at all. But, was a 3" bore, so came off to put a 2.5" bore on.

Getting to the point where you are happy can be a nightmere!! Its almost trial and error, since everyone has a different perception of what counts as acceptable drone or not.

Yeah I totally agree, I reckon most people on here would say mine isn't that loud, or is quite acceptable, might be the fact that I've gone straight from a stock bmw, to a stock impreza and then to a 4.5" cannon, and obviously compared to the last 2 anything is loud. And the drone might just be my ears or the start of a cold haha. And I've read that the wagons are more prone to drone because they don't have the sealed off boot of the saloons, it's effectively one big resonance chamber, so it just amplifies a loud exhaust.

I've ordered a bung from ebay and I'll give that a go first, 20 quid is preferable to 200 for a new box, and there's less choice for us non turbo gits

At £20 its worth a punt, but you might find the engine/power feels a bit limp with it in. It does on turbo cars, but you might be able to get away with it.

But, if it does, you might spend the next 3 odd months fitting, removing and fitting exhausts until you are happy!

But, its all part of the fun right? Thats what i tell myself anyway! :-)

Yeah suppose, it's called tuning not bolting on, so things need some fiddling I guess. I'd love to try a prodrive box but it won't fit my non turbo, and it seems they're rare as rocking horse crap :/

True, it's all worth it once you get to where you want to be in the project.

I have a prodrive back box that might be for sale next week ;-)

Wish you'd have said that earlier! Haha just bought one off ebay, 60 quid, it's from a classic but I think it should fit if I modify the flange and move the rear hanger
