Ok. I've had the pleasure of getting a lovely cam belt kit from Alyn @ AS Performance at absolutely lightning speed.
However, I've ordered one for a 98 Type R (Which is what my car is), but its going onto a 1994 closed deck block. What I've also noticed is that I left the tensioner bracket (seen at the top right of this picture) on the bottom end I sold....


So.....I will likely have the old tensioner bracket (not at my house, stored elsewhere) but will the tensioner fit the bracket? (tensioner is the pulley type)

If not, If I bought a bracket for a 98, would that fit the '94 block?

 

These pics are of a standard early MY96 timing set up. IIRC the alloy plate that bolts to the block and (the later) tensioner on later cars is different.
The back plate is a direct fit if a later spring type tensioner is to be fitted.
I'm not aware of early hydraulic tensioners failing so didn't consider it to be a worthwhile mod when building my engine.

Looks like your tensioner mounting is for the later "spring" type tensioner.

 

Yeah, except I don't have it anymore lol. Lesson number 1, strip to the bare bones any engine you may sell so you aren't scraping bits together when you need them. I've ordered a bracket for the later spring type, I assume they will fit all blocks.

Now I see you have all cams lined up, but the R/H cam's for me want to push the valves in to line the 2 marks up on each pulley on the R/H. I'm a little afraid of them touching the top of the piston so thought I'd ask on here first?

 

yes the backing plates are specific to tensioner type.............and simply bolt onto any age block

Awesome, thanks fella's. I've started checking the valve clearances and found on both heads the exhaust gaps are tight on most valves (3/4 on each bank). Could there be any reason for this?.

 

In my kit i have the "small pulley" which I've left out, i wasn't even sure where it went until I saw Alan Jeffrey's picture this morning...



Is it something that's better to use than not?

 

The small idler helps to control 'belt whip' but you need the later tensioner mounting bracket to use with it.
