I have a jdm 2005 sti and it has passed mot without issue including them driving it for brake test but it does have a slight knock on the front that I can't find, I was hoping it was a bush and would have been found on mot, does anyone know of anything that can cause this that doesn't cause any play so as to fail mot. It appears to be more noticeable under low speed conditions when braking in traffic. Bumps in road doesn't seem to cause it. Could it be the pads in calipers.

 

I had a knock coming from the front of my 05 Jdm sti. It turned out to be a worn front shock absorber, with no obvious wear or play in it. Steve.

 

They are original, although rears have been replaced before I had it, is there any easy way to confirm if that's the issue without replacing them to find out its something else. I thought it was drop links or a front arm bush, but sure these would have been found on mot.

 

Have you tried driving the car round in a tight circle at low speed first one way then the other and listen for clicking and knocks could be the start of a front wheel bearing going

Can try that as well but would have thought any wheel bearing play would be detected at mot, I have to do a service this month so will get the wheels off and see if I can find anything

 

FWIW, we had a front wheel bearing go on our hatch - no sign of play whatsoever when jacked up, but a definite droning when driving. Only once it was replaced was the play im the removed bearing obvious.

Anyway - wheel bearings generally produce a speed-related drone. If it is clonking over bumps - and bad road surfaces are a good test - then could well be anti-roll bar bushes. That's what's up with our hatch, and just waiting to find time to fit the new ones

My 2005 STI Type UK has started doing this, same scenario, only at slow speeds and not always on bumpy roads. Would be good to know what the cause is.

 

I had a front end knock on mine. 2003 STi. Just as you describe. Mainly at low speed. Drove me nuts. I replaced the ARB bushes with some whiteline poly ones and its now silent and feels 10 times tighter. Cheap to buy and easy to fit. Also mine passed the MOT with them knocking. Just worn but not dangerous I guess. Worth a shot. Cheap improvement if nothing else. Hope this helps.

I was thinking drop links or anti rollbar bushes as tyres do not wear uneven so the wheel can't be moving, I just thought they would of found it on mot, but might try the bushes to see if it is that as they are not expensive and as you say a very quick and easy job to do.

 

Mine does it on breaking or just after I've braked in reverse- something to do with the pads moving I'm told its normal

Had passed mot few weeks earlier with the knock.
