Default Gearbox advice

Evening all

Done a lot of searching and pretty much come to a conclusion, but just was the final nod from you experts...

Symptom

Warm engine over 40mph crunching into 4th gear from 3rd.

Nothing when cold

nothing under 40mph

nothing changing down through the gear.

So conclusion 4th gear synchro worn or on its way out.

Choices Strip and replace syncro, or go for a shock type oil.

Thinking it could be the oil loosing viscosity as it warms up (Sounded Good) it trawl the extensive history I have for the last oil change.

Gearbox oil was last changed 09/08/12 which is 10k miles ago

at the pricey cost of £18.52 before VAT on the invoice during a full Service

Now to me thats cheep oil.

Got to be the problem surely, just hoping the box isn't damaged!!!!

The first step would be changing to a better quality oil

Mine had the same symptoms since mid January 5-6000 miles ago, thought to myself, 4th gear on its way out; last Monday..... 3rd gear stripped.

Took spare box out of shed, placed in boot, took to garage

Ticking time bomb is indeed the case with a 5speed and 360ft/lb

Aye, mine started with the 4th gear crunch, then got more difficult to select 1st. I changed the clutch thinking it was the cause (clutch was on its way out anyway), but little difference.
In the morning I felt the car give a really small stutter then was fine, I was giving it a bit on the way home and stripped 3rd.

Hope that is of some help. Garage took 4.5hrs to change.

On a related note, what gearbox oil would you guys recommend for my UK turbo? Doesn't need to be mega special stuff but don't want to just put the cheapest stuff I can find in either. I'm assuming any 75w90 gear oil from a decent brand such as Motul would do the job? And will this stuff also do for the rear diff as I might as well change that at the same time?

Hi

Yes, it takes a 75w-90

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-...ion-fluid.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline 75w-90GL5 NS and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

Cheers

Hi Tim, the Castrol Universal looks like a great deal if I can get the 10% off for Scoobynet members. I'd be after enough to do the gearbox and rear diff so I guess 3 1L bottles, do I need to give you a ring or send you a PM to get any discount?

EDIT: Never mind just spotted the discount code in your signature, I'll get that ordered now
Cheers!

std 5spd car takes 3.5ltrs for the box and around 0.7 for the diff so you'll need more than you stated!!!

Millers & Motul all in stock at cracking deals here.........................
