Question clutch/flywheel combo

Just a quick question...

My bro has an 03 JDM STi (running std 6 speed box).

He's changing the clutch AND flywheel. Am I right in thinking he can fit a 5 speed clutch and flywheel combo?

As far as I was aware the only difference between them is that the 6 speed flywheel has lugs on it to fit a 6 speed clutch. BUT if the clutch AND flywheel are both being replaced then it makes no difference as long as the clutch/flywheel combo is the same??

Thanks
Alex

I've got a 6 speed from an 02 JDM STi in my classic running a 5 speed clutch and flywheel no problem... but its the engine side ofthe 03 JDM I just need to know if there's any difference there from theclassic engine?

Is the difference on the flywheel only on the clutch side?

Not totally sure I understand your question, but 5 speed and 6 speed flywheels fix the same way using the same number of bolts. Nothing to stop you fitting either to any crankshaft.

Thank you David.

The 5 speed clutch doesnt fit the 6 speed flywheel and visa versa. It was the crank shaft end I was wondering about so thats for confirming either will fit.

This is what I'm talkin about:

5 speed flywheel

6 speed flywheel

Its a very clever way to get us to pay more money for something, the lugs on the 6 speed flywheel fit nicely into the 6 speed clutch as it has the correct fitment. So you see you cant mix and match, BUT you can use the 5 speed clutch AND flywheel with a 6 speed gearbox and save yourself around £50 on the clutch and almost £100 on the flywheel (if you're goin for Fidanza as pictured).

except that the 5spd clutch doesn't carry the same torque ability (like for like) as the larger 6spd unit.................

Do you know the exact figures for the torque thresholds on each?

Also how do they relate when upgraqding to paddle clutches, would the torque variation remain the same or change exponentially?

I'm aware also the diametres differ by 10-15mm so there's also slightly less surface area.

I'm not looking to take the clutch/flywheel to its limits and I've got this 5 speed set up on my classic with 6 speed box, running 380bhp... my brother has a newage JDM running similar power and as he's changing the clutch and flywheel, I've suggested to save some money there's no problem running the same set up as me.
