2006 sti vs 2007 sti (Type UK models)

Default 2006 sti vs 2007 sti (Type UK models)

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows exactly what the main differences are between the early hawk sti's type uk's (55, 06, 56 plate > ) and the very last hawk sti type uk's (07, 57, late 08's)

From what I have heard the differences are:

*head gasket revised on 07 > (due to early 2.5 litre head gasket problems)
*rear diffuser on most hawks after 56 >
*heard there was different gearing (2nd, 3rd, 4th) 07 >
*different turbo v43 07 >
*better engine mounts 07 >

If anyone knows if these are correct or knows anything else about the differences, please could you let me know as I can't get a definite answer.

Most info I got was from here, nosiac, club wrx etc

I would just like to know if the type uk model sti's were changed or not.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

There were two model Hawkeyes, the 06 and the 07. Registration is irrelevant really.

The 06 had different engine mounts I do believe and the 07 reverted to previous model as per 04.05, etc.

The main difference is the rear lights- the inner backing has a grey colour on the 06 and a clear mirror finish on the 07 cars.

Both cars have the Subaru Pliedes badge rather than SUBARU lettering on the tail and UK cars also do not have WRX badges on the rear boot either.

There was a definite gradual change of parts, as the 05 Blob has the wide track and DCCD fitted, but only the Hawks have the rear under diffuser and top vane spoiler fitted.

As to gearing, my book only goes up the the launch of the Hawkeye, so any changes in gearing, etc for the 07 are beyond me. The Head gaskets fail on all of the damn things, but it is possible the Hatch type one was fitted on the last cars, but as it's the piston ringlands that fail if the HG doesn't go first, your very best buy would be a 56 reg car with forged pistons and rods and studded heads. Lower tax and all the reliability Subaru forgot to build into them in the first place.

There was a head gasket revision on the later Hawkeye sti's (my07) but you could get a 07 registered car that was manufactured in 06. Its not unheard of for 07 cars to have HG issues but more common on 06 cars, maybe for the reason ive mentioned? Other than that i don't think there is any difference between them.

Thanks mate, Just curious as I just bought a late 57 plate sti type uk and the subaru dealer said the 07's were slightly better than the 06's. Not much in it though.

The way to fix this issue is to fit 11mm ARP head studs in place of the crappy standard bolts. The subaru gaskets are very good but the Cosworth stopper gaskets are better. Ring land fracture is an issue on all the 2.5's throughout the range except the cs400. The fix for this is forged pistons.

Thanks man, how much do you think it would cost to get the cosworth gaskets or good forged pistons?

Labour is the biggest cost unless your handly with the spanners,
Ball part prices are.
Mahle forged powerpak pistons £500
ARP 11mm studs £300
Gaskets £300
To get a [pro to build it your looking at around £3.5-4.5 k depending on parts and machine work.
There are sever4al builders here who specialize in these jobs.
Finch motorsport
Engine Tuner
API
Stockcar are a few off the top of my head. Finch motorsport built mine

That sounds like a good idea to keep me busy, I'm going to try and see if my finances will let me get a forged engine for the end of the year, they sound like the way to go, again much appreciated for the info man.
