My options are :-

1. Brand new BC coilovers. £650 ish
2. Brand new KYB Ultra x 4 and lowering springs, £ 650 ish
3. 8 year old AST coilovers which were fully rebuilt 1 year ago. Everything new apart from the actual suspension body. Included is whiteline roll bars front and rear (need painting) £800


What do we all think?

 

Im considering options regarding suspension too so would be nice to know peoples opinions

Well I'm seriously debating on removing my bc's as our roads are not the best lets be fair plus once you have laid out for the geo setup on top then who really alters them after that? Unless your going on track then chances are you won't, and by the time you set them up all correctly again for track and come home and you have another geo setup to road requirements at another circa £100 then it starts to get expensive, so are you really going to get the use out of coil overs? You really need to ask yourself that as i can't stand crashing and bashing over potholes or speed humps its a pita and make me cringe, the scoobs are the only cars I have ever owned with them on, I've always opted for a decent shock and spring setup, I like the gimmick of the coilovers and if I got proper use out of them then it would be different, but the reality of it is another matter if your using it as an everyday car like I do, but that's just me

 

go for new suspension, at least they will have a years warranty, plus you will know the full history then

 

The AST's are from a friends car. He has had them since new. Am surprised as I thought you would all say get the AST's. Had BCs on my classic and liked them, however thought they were not as good on the newage due to extra weight. Confused now????

 

Agree with you on that , always thought i would play about with mine but they havent moved since they went on & geo'd. Only bonus is the adjusters , allough all i seemed to do is keep softening them ! Still think it feels "crashy" but dont want to loose the feel .

 

Litchfields fitted ASTs with the Whiteline kit to their T20s and T25s, which might be a pointer for you.

 

lowering springs and shocks, dont bother with coilovers unless its a track toy

 

Get BC coilovers, fitted some myself 3 years ago to my 03sti and they transformed the car and have been great.
The kyb units are seriously flawed in their design.

 

had bc's on mine for 2 years now no issues
got them off apex performance for about £550

 

Roger Clark Motorsport sell them as well.

Would the ASTs not be better than the BCs as they rebuilt?

 

I think a new BC body is only £60 odd.

If you can afford it (and was wrx9181 said, if he was going for quality), then the KW series suspension should be on your shopping list.

Personally if you want real quality/value, get some BC ER series coilovers. Mine are fantastic and the old girl is sitting 2" up from standard right now all soft and off-roady for the snow and ice we have. I am on 25/26 Rebound and 27/28 compression f/r and they are very comfy, even with the 6/5 springs still on!!! I should have put some 4/3 on for Winter but never got round to it.

I have played with the camber and toe this year but there's so much adjustment on them and they clean up like new every time I get round to it. No corrosion or problems either. Totally impressed.

Have BC's on mines, with 22mm rear whiteline ARB and whiteline ALK. Impressed for fast road handling but be dubious for harsh road driving. Not the most comfortable even set to soft damping. Still wanted change them - very highly recommended on here as you can see.
