Buying advice on WR1
Hi folks, joined here a while ago in anticipation that I would be buying a WR1. Yesterday I put a deposit on one and was just wanting some advice on what I should be checking before actually handing over the dosh... known faults, general faults etc.
Car is 2004, totally standard, 48k on clock, FSH and serviced every 4k, cambelt change 1500 miles ago,new discs and pads all round.
Any input would be much appreciated,
Thanks in advance - Jim

wr1 is essentially a narrow track sti with dccd and an awful paint job.
the widetrack has a better spec and updated interior.

£8k is suspiciously low for a WR1, so either you're getting a bargain from a seller who doesn't know what they're selling - or it's a shed!
If it's sound, I'd be tempted to turn it around and make a couple of £k on it then buy a widetrack for £8k instead :P

£9k is the lowest I've seen a WR1 go for, and I saw one sell for £15k... though it belonged to a detailing company and it was an absolute minter.
I wouldn't say everyone is down on the WR1, the Widetrack is just a better car and they tend to be a grand or two cheaper than WR1's with equal mileage/history.

Yes, the Impreza market is a buyers' one right now and you will always have trouble shifting that car not to mention insuring it!
Buying a cat D can be a cheap way of owning a model car that's normally out of your price range as long as its repaired properly. As others have said selling on and maybe insuring could be a problem. Cars can be written off cat D with very little damage these days. I would not go near a cat C though.
What TT said or you want it for £6500 being recorded on the register as a D he's asking the same kind of money as straight ones, there was one for sale by me not so long back with 54k and 1 owner an that was 8.5k private sale, and it still took a while for it to sell and I'm not sure if he may have taken less tbh as it was for sale for 2 months or so, they may be a limited run of cars, but things have seriously taken a beating on price these days and if its recorded then that car seriously has to appeal to somebody for that price, if it was me and he wouldn't negotiate then I would leave it tbh, but that's just my opinion its your cash
The guys name who owned it on wr1oc had the username of Foley (if anybody knows of him), i just called the current owner, hes gutted and didnt know it was cat d!! Hes gonna call previous owner to see what damage was. Now if it was light panel im considering taking advantage of situation and offering 6k, what you guys think??

If I was looking for a car to track or to heavily modify and keep for eternity, I'd consider a cheeky 5-6k offer.
£5-6k could get you a straight/non-written off 2004 non WR1 STi though I guess.
I'd see this as a lucky escape, spend your £8k on a widetrack

It's up to you mate. If having a WR1 with black seats is valuable to you - perhaps.
If you're rather the piece of mind of a non-written off car (why was the fact it's been written off hidden from the previous owner?) then you could get a non-widetrack, non-WR1 car for 6k or so.
It could be nothing, bit of panel damage which has been well repaired - but everyone views writeoffs differently, and your ability to resell will depend on that.
