Default Astra VXR or.....

Ok guys, another one of these boring threads!

I want to get a new car in a few months time, I'm stuck between the Astra VXR or Subaru Wrx Sti 04 plate.

I know this is a Scooby forum and It might be biased but I'll post this on VXROnline too. I have a 9k budget, obviously I'm gonna test drive both but anyone here with experience with any if not both cars?

Thanks

I've just left Subaru and gone back to Vauxhall mate, although a different animal than the vxr.

But have owned one, torque steer to hell, and struggle to get traction in the wet.

Get the Scoob mate, you know it makes sense

The scoob is 4wd
Sti has an extra 40 horses over the vxr, solid engine and gearbox that is easily tuneable.

Ive had the astra sri and always felt very crammed inside. cant comment on power and tuning for the vxr

Scoob more easily tunable, quicker, more grip. Awful mpg.
Astra: more comfortable to sit and ride in. Better mpg. But still not great

Not sure about the "Scoob more easily tuneable" alcazar, you can get a map and map it yourself very easily, not like the " great mapping ripoff of the Subaru scene"

You can map your own subaru too with OS fella. wouldnt recommend it without a lot of reading up though.

I have an 04 sti and my pal has an astra vxr, out of the 2 id say get the scooby. I like the vxr's and they can be made quick quite easily, they are nice inside and are a nice, comfortable ride.

The gearbox's are no more weak than the scooby 5 speed's, a rebuild with some better taper bearings and theyre good for descent power, they do however suffer in the handling department, even with sport mode on they're still quite poor.

The scooby handles well, sounds good, tunable for descent money and look loads better in general, they do cost loads in fuel but thats part of driving the cars we do, no performance cars are economical.

Id say scooby all the way, but it comes down to what type of beast your after.

The Scooby has four doors, so it's far more family friendly.

For those of you, like me, interested to hear what the 'other side's' opinion is though:

http://www.vxronline.co.uk/forum/sho...8-Astra-VXR-or.....

It makes me chuckle as, in the main, it's a mirror image of this thread.

My only experience of the VXR is an acquaintance who has incredibly spent more than £30,000 on his (including buying the car secondhand) to get it up to 320 bhp, with appropriate brake and suspension modifications of course. All was good, until he rolled it and wrote it off on a track day a couple of months ago.

I've not mentioned GT-Rs to him as he could almost have had one of those instead, and it seems unkind....

I like the VXR Astra, they all seem to be driven by tools who want to race you though. Which is a shame.

Can imagine the Astra to be downright scary in the wet, especially if running extra power.

I like the Burger King version of the corsa in white, with the anthracite alloys.
I guess a bit unpractical for most being 2 door but I think they look amazing.

I've always been into vauxhalls since i started driving. Had most vauxhalls with all differant engines in them. I have just sold my Vauxhall Cavalier turbo with a Z20let in:

To get to the point my brother had his VXR for over 2 years and was tuned to over 300bhp and haveing borrowed it many times i can say that they are awesome cars and do handle really well when setup right. He did a few track days in it and it did well.

But i've always wanted a scooby and have just bought a 2006 impreza and i have to say they are in a differant league completely, just totally differant cars.

If you have the money to run the impreza as parts are expensive then get an impreza, if not then get the astra!

I've gone 05 STI - Astra VXR racing Edition - 02 STI. in the last couple of years. Astra was a lovely car........but any hint of dampness and it wheelspins for England. I got bored with it quickly and in the end hardly drove it and got rid after 9 months.

Subaru all the way and £9k will get you a very good 05 Sti at least, unless the 04 one is modded.

That VXR link makes me laugh.

They comment about the image problem on an Impreza... do they not realise they own Vauxhall Astra's?

lol, ah the good old argument

vxr and sti are very different cars.
Performance wise sti will wipe the floor with the astra mod'd or standard trim.
Running costs are higher on sti for sure.
sti has alot more potential for moding, but cost more to mod and not as forgiving to dodgy mods (flash maps for example).

If you can afford it and want the performance then sti, if budget is an issue vxr.
