Pity your P1 sounds so awful!

M3 does look wonderful - and the Top Gear report looked excellent. But then for £38K I'd expect the car to be top class.

Cool

Even though the M3 is £9k more than the BMW 330CL as it comes as standard with a lot of extras the difference is a lot less.

The standard extras on the M3 are pretty impressive. I can see one in my future in a few years time when they drop a bit in price.

Rob & Adam,

I've already looked into importing an M3 and with about the equivalent of £4K extras can have one for £37,500 inc VAT and road tax etc. and thats direct from Frankfurt (not lining a brokers pocket), but what worries me is, what you will save initially over the UK price you will loose more when you sell it.
My wifes Golf GTi Turbo is an import, but what you will loose on residaul is in a different league compared to what you would loose on an M3 import.

saw it - not sure on the 40K, once you added a few bits. If I got one it would be an import, but what the hell I keep telling myself - Keep the P1 until you can afford a Porker...so come on hackers do some damage so I can put my rates up

Typed this and lost it so its gonna be bullet points.

1.residuals of all cars have plummeted to import second hand values.

2.resale price is prorata for what you paid, therefore you will lose the same percentage but a lower amount with an import.

3.base car cheaper by a significant figure, extras cheaper by an even more significant figure.

4.Delivery time massively reduced.

5.Brokers have special relationships and can get bulk discounts, plus they have shopped around and have friends in the industry, so get a free quote before you write them off.

6.Aside from all this, I would wait to see which faults they iron out. I would never by the first of a new car, plus I have heard they are holding back supply for a reason that in my mind is fairly important.

You'll save a fortune on the extras alone. I looked at the cost of a 5 series in the UK before I came out here and MOST of the extras were around 50% cheaper in Germany than in the UK. Why it costs over 200quid more in the UK for a CD changer I don't know....Plus the cars themselves are cheaper, I think the Import v's UK issue will erode over time. It was only 2 years ago people would never have imported a car fro Europe, now its commonplace. Its a cultural thing relating to people resistance to change and the unknown, familiarity will reduce its impact over time and eventually it'll become a non issue. As they say a few grand saving in the hand is better that a possible better resale later. At least its guaranteed

Regards
Campbell

Question

Adam M,

I know what it is like importing cars from Europe, I did it four years ago with a BMW E30 M3 Evo II from Germany then two years ago saved a genuine £6,500 on a new VW Golf GTI Turbo which is very well specced and also without going through a broker. At the time I spoke with quite a few brokers and they couldn't come any where near what I saved.

The new M3's 2nd & 3rd year warranty through BMW is £816 and you would be a foolish man if you didn't buy the extended warranty, and the first service is chargeable on an import car £200+VAT so I've been told by my local dealer, this is free on a UK car, that's already a grand or so down. A UK supplied car's residual value is still worth at least 10% more than an imported car and I reckon that's got to be around £3,000.

When I imported the Golf I said then I would never buy another UK car because of the savings to be made from Europe, but the motor industry has changed quite a bit and I believe now that the big savings of a year or two ago are now gone.

This is just my personal opinion and one which has changed since importing the Golf.
