Awd to Fwd?
Hi all, might sound wrong to start with but wait....
I'm looking at making a trike....I know, it's going to be missing a wheel lol. But the problem is that I love scooby engines so naturally I want to use one, plus vw's are kinda common and highly under powered and over priced. Now the idea was/is/maybe to use a auto box scooby and remove the rear drive altogether so it's just fwd then mount it all at the back of the trike, might even consider trying a manual if I can come up with a way of looping the gear selector around the box and engine since the box still needs to be at the back of the trike, but any way, is there a way of making a Awd box a permanent fwd without any damage, have heard about the fuse thing in some models but it's never seen as a permanent solution.....
Any thoughts?
Cheers

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think some of the automatic gearboxes on the older (1992 to 1997ish at least) Imprezas and Legacys will engage FWD only when a certain fuse is is inserted.
How long it'll keep working like that before something breaks is another question though.
An alternative is getting the scoob engine to fit a VW bug/camper/911/912 gearbox; there are conversion kits out there and plenty of bugs and campers roaming around with a Subaru engine hanging out the back

Theres a compny in australia that make a conversion kit to make the 5mt essentially fwd for putting the subaru engine into a mid engined sportscar. Cant remember the company, but there should be links through the saker sportscars site.
You could go for a transaxle setup and use the front diff to drive the rear wheels like these:

Heya all and cheers, been busy searching and to my surprise i've managed to snag a vw DK gearbox for 99p, 4ths gone but have been told it's possibly just a bush inside the selector or at worse the gear itself, so it's either a quick fix or a partial rebuild but has given me a base to start with.
