Default Wobbly ****?

For some reason when I get in the car on a hot day the gear **** seems to move about which is rather annoying when trying to change gear but after a few minutes it seems to tighten up? Is that a common fault?

Never heard of that myself. Perhaps undo it and apply some thread lock and do it back up?

Sorry always put my posts via Word for spelling check except this one. When you put it back it comes out odd.

How do i take the gear **** off?

Ohhhhh I'm sure there's a spell check on here Actually, going by a lot of the posts recently, probably not

Anyway, IIRC, there's a little grub screw in the 'collar'. Undo that and then I think it just unscrews. It's a while since I changed mine though

Check whether it is the **** or the shaft. Pointless removing the **** if the shaft is wobbling. If it is the shaft then do not hold it to resist the wobble.

My imprezas have exhibited this trait and as long as everything else seems OK I wouldn't wory about it.

When I fitted an aftermarket **** to my old '93 WRX, the grub screw was rusted in (or missing - can't remember precisely). So I simply wound a set amount of electrical tape around the shaft's threading*. Then simply 'screwed' the **** over the tape/shaft combo, using plenty of sustained downward pressure. Solid as a rock, stiff as hell; no '**** wobble' whatsoever.

Probably the cheapest 'fix' I've ever done.

* Tip: make sure you wind the tape in the same direction as what you would screw the **** i.e. clockwise. Otherwise, as soon as you start screwing the ****, it'll immediately start undoing the tape! Also, start from the bottom of the thread and spiral-wind up to the top.

You also may have to experiment with the correct thickness of tape: too much, and the **** can't get a starting grip and physically won't fit over the tape; too little, and it obviously won't get any purchase in the first place.
