Hi

The last few days when cold my 95 wrx keeps trying to cut out when standing still, this happens until the car reasches normal temp (gauge half way). Once the temp reches the normal range it then seems to be ticking over 1100 rpm anyone got any ideas?

Tried to check the codes but unfortunately there is no engine check light coming up not even to say that it's ok :/

 

It looks like you have not had the car long judging by the number of posts.

Sadly some Scoobs have been sold with faults and CEL disconnected so you don't know. Hopefully this is not the case but I fear it maybe.

 

Sorry reference the previous post, the LED's have been removed or blanked off.

 

It takes 5 mins to whip the clocks out, if I remember correctly its a standard sidelight 501 bulb for the CEL. You could even use one from one of the other warning lights until you buy some but they are pennies, even from Halfrauds.

I had the same with the Subaru I just bought but twigged before I'd even bought the car as it was in limp home mode but no CEL on. The previous owner had completely removed the bulb. Still took the car anyway but knocked £100 of the price and fixed the problem myself for £10.

 

I think the point is is car is playing up and he cannot check why using the built in diagnostic and he's asking advice. It maybe that it's been done to hide a bigger problem.

Can I ask why your car was in limp mode?

 

No it looks like he can check for faults but the CEL isn't lighting up at all, not even on the 2nd click of the ignition.

The fault with mine was the speedo not working which in turn stopped the car revving past 4k rpm, I knew this should have thrown up some sort of fault code but nothing was showing on the dash so I knew the bulb wasn't working. When I text him to ask if the car had always been like that since he bought it and if he could ever remeber seeing the CEL come on he replied by saying the speedo stopped working shortly after he bought the car and had only seen the CEL come on once. He reckoned he didn't know it was in limp home mode as he never revved past 4K anyway. He said he would get a "mechanic friend" to check as I told him the bulb was probably blown, he said his mate looked and confirmed the bulb was blown, when I finally got the car there wasn't even a bulb in!!

All sounded a bit suspicious at the time and I did take a major risk buying the car but was 99.9% sure it was the gearbox speed sensor, turned out I was right and I got a bargain of a car.

I think his "mechanic" has removed the bulb and told him to get shot of the car. However 4 months later and all is golden and I'm as happy as a pig in ****!

If you are asking for advice tho I would definitely start with the idle control valve, lambda sensor and even MAF. Someone with more knowledge will probably come along and correct me tho

 

I think you have proved a point in that Scoob's are being sold to those who "don't know" by some untruthful people.

Not all stories turn out to be like your but it is a tale of caution.

 

This is the ICV take it off and give it a clean with some carb cleaner but paint mark it first as it obviously effects your idle!

 

I only took a chance as I have owned an Impreza and many other cars before and was confident in my own skills to tackle whatever arose, but I agree that there are so many Impreza's out there that are not been maintained correctly and when problems do appear some owners are simply removing warning lights and selling them on. Although this happens with other makes too Imprezas do tend to be driven harder than other cars in the same price range and thus are more vulnerable to potential failures which are being masked.

Hi thanks for the replies going to try cleaning the idle control valve tomorrow as shown above, helfords not far so will grab a bulb while I'm there incase I need one. Another thing is I read that the car might make clicking sounds when finding faults also, my car doesnt make any sort of noise when checking for faults. I think I should of saved my money when I recently brought bilstein adjustables might be out of pocket when I find I have a list of faults

the clicking noise mentioned is only the various relays clicking as they are tested - its barely noticeable, shudn't worry about it
