Default WHich Gearbox for 380-400bhp?

Quick question regarding gearboxes.

I'm looking to possibly run my v2 STi 555 at around the 380bhp mark, I have already sourced a pink Exedy organic racing clutch and at the moment I'm running with a v4 type-r close ratio gearbox. What power levels wil this combination comfortably take? I'm not doing any launches, so just the odd bit of rolling start track use and the odd spirited drive on private roads, so without going down the 6-speed g/b route what are my options?

When the Vers 3/4 [ TY752 VB type ] gearbox gives up the ghost [ it will ]- get a Vers 5 or 6 type TY754 VB gearbox That'll be the first level of upgrade. Get a good one and it should be OK.

When you get around to doing it ask on here and one of us will tell you compatible numbers of boxes that will bolt straight in.

Yeah, no doubt some will take it. It depends upon the ' nut behind the wheel '. We had a track car running 407 hp on an old Vers 3 non dccd box. Never missed a beat, it did get upgraded to a 754 long before it broke, as the owner didn't want a failure in the middle of a race season.

Just depends upon an amount of luck and sympathy when changing gear.

mine is surviving ok at the mo on 380+ (v3/4) but i would like to upgrade to a v5/6, just start saving.

i think the exedy pink would be ok btw

Thanks David, Sonic & Steve. Will start looking around for one.
To be honest David, I know the STi 555 is an old car so I'm trying to be as gentle as possible but still stretch it's legs a bit and open her up at the same time.

No launches etc will hopefully hopefully stave off failure until a replacement box is found.

mine gets driven pretty hard lol i launch but try to ride clutch as much as i can rather than just dropping the clutch.

i think its redline something or the top millers stuff, not cheap though, well the millers aint anyway

Redline Lightweight Shockproof and Millers CRX NT are the ones you're thinking of. Top end oils that give great protection, plus they are good at covering up the signs of wear.

It's all down to your luck. My car ate a ty54 box which was fully rebuilt 250 miles after mapping. Now running straight cut PPG with no issues bar the synchro in 3rd and 4th needing replaced

Yep, looking ahead, I know someone with a PPG who's gonna head down the 6-spd route, so maybe looking at his box when it's time to change .

If you want to do it for little money fit a newage pref 05 -55 plate blob wrx box and 3.54 R160 rear diff from same car. Box code will be TY754VN4AA you shouldnt pay more than around £300 for both. I ran one for two hard seasons on a 20G and forged 2.5 and still have the box with zero issues when removed. You may well find your engine close to its limits at that power as its on standard internals I assume.

just use your box for a while my early dccd box seem s sweet as .

but arch that does sound like that box worked for you? what is the standard diff on a type r 160 or 180. or did u use box and diff from same blob etc? how much power were u running?

Ive very limited knowledge of classic gearboxes, but I had a Bugeye WRX box running around 330/320 when it decided to let go on me over taking So although it might be the best fit and most economical suggestion, just ensure your getting a good unabused one. Clearly the one that gave up on me must have been tired or already starting to fail already, but as Arch said you can pick them up very cheap, I got one back in 2009 for £550 fitted by Neil @ Scoobyparts (Scoobyteknix) and they did the clutch change for me too (I supplied).

The box I used was low mileage when it went in. It was used for one year of sprints at around 300 bhp/280lbs ft with a plated 3.54 R160 diff. I then removed the box and fitted a classic rear tailcone with 1:1 drop gears and fitted a whole R180 back end with 3.9 plated diff. This was used for a further 1.5 seasons with a 20G estimated around 400bhp mark no idea of torque but it was on a 2.5 so torque would have been decent. I was not exactly mechanically sympathetic with it and it was lunched about as agressively as its possible to do. The box was removed fully functional to allow the upgrade to a DCCD 6 speed to cope with an increase in power. The problem with this type of question is that for everyone that has had good results from a box there are others that have had poor results.

The later hawkeye 5 speed boxes are stronger again. The front end was totally redesigned and the case is significantly wider. The problem with these is the rear diff is from memory a 4.11 so you need to pick up the diff with the box, it uses male ended shafts so you need the shafts with the box and it has the opposite clutch to standard (can never remember which is push and which is pull) which limits clutch options although there are now a few upgrade options out there now.

P1/ Sti V ty 754 box did 18k miles with me at 450bhp/380 ft lb no problem. Swapped centre diff out from viscous to dccd too no problem.
No drag strip launches but driven hard.

What sort of pwr/tq were you running through it then Arch?

You keeping hold of the box/diff, or up for offers? Ive been offered a TY754VN5AA from a 55blob wrx with diff for £400, freshly broken car, any good?
