6 speed box ????

I've brought a 6 speed conversion for my classic just wondered what I should expect ie the gear ratios compared to the 5 speed etc cheers lads
i hate them, way to short for my liking, always seem to run out of revs.
But that said its a very persoanl thing so there isn;t a right or wrong with it, i would have advise you driven one before you bought it to see what you though.

Is it a UK box or JDM ?
I believe all 6 speeds have the same 1st to 4th with the JDM cars having shorter 5th and 6th.
I had a JDM through my hands briefly and must say I didn't like the feel of it, seemed to be forever searching for another gear.

I prefer UK 6 speed box over my previous 5 speed.2,3,4 are just perfect for what i need(it totally changed my classic).....thou i would be glad if i the 6th would be longer for long trips on high way
will be a jap box then i would have thought, uk 6 speed has a decent long 6th.

Mine has a UK 6-speed. 1st to 4th are the same, then, afaik, they fitted an EXTRA gear inbetween 4th and top, and called it 5th.
6th is the same as the UK 5th.
Mine sits at almost exactly 3000rpm in top at 80mph, (French motorways
). My Diesel xantia would be over 90 at those revs, we could have done with a longer 6th........
That makes it off boost, though, even now, and quite economical.
It's not power that kills boxes, it's TORQUE. I changed mine when I went from a 2 litre to a forged 2.5.
I find the car MUCH easier to drive especially around town, now.

JDM box at 70mph is doing 3200 rpm in 6th, I now have a UK Hawk 6 speed and at 70mph that sits at 2600 rpm. However the Hawk box is longer through all the ratios and perfect for bigger power builds
The box you're getting will feel a bit short to start with and you will probably wish you had longer gears, but when you really go for it 1-4 gears it is awesome. 5th is a bit annoying as it's quite a bit longer than 4th, so just rev it out a bit further before you change else it feels like it goes dead when you slot 5th into place!
However, your car should have plenty of power and torque to maybe not notice so much.

Where as the hawk is doiing 2.6k@70mph, it redlines at 7k, the JDM doing 3.2k@70mph redlines at 8.2k.
Its still lower than most family petrol cars which do 3.5-4k at 70mph (depending on which car it is), so not too bad overall

The redline is the engine not the box though! I have a JDM 6 speed box on my 2.5 bug and find it a bit short ratio on the road, especially as all the power/torque is lower down the rev range.

on my old 5 speed (version 6 sti box) at 70 mph i was around 3100 rpm, and on my 6 speed (uk 2002 sti) at 70 mph it is around 2700 rpm
so 6th gear is better for long drives over the 5 speed.
at 30 mph, sometimes i think if there was a 4.5 gear it would be good, 4th abit high reves, 5th to low.

You really need to be good at fast gear changes to get the best out of it, it is also so much tighter and precise compared to the 5 speed. If revved to 7.5/8k revs with fast gear changes it is a superb box. I couldnt live with it if only revved to 6.5k though.

After 6 years with a 5 speed it does take a bit a getting use to a 6 speed, I have a uk dccd box running 350 which works very well and makes it a much more aggressive car but you have to be quick though the gear as 1-4 is about the same as 1-3 on 5 speed 4=5 5=6 there are not quite the same but close. But I can see with big power a hawkeye box would be the way to go.
