I tried a universal one on my bug mate nd the answer is no , the openings in the back of the morettes are too small to accommodate the HID fittings

I have the Moretts on my 02 bug and a HID kit fitted into the projector h7 bit of them the ballasts are strapped outside the headlight bit just in the engine bay. They work wonders I can see at night which is nice. just passed its MOT last week with no probs with them on the car.

I have a bug eye and fitted some H7s in mine! No problem at all !!

It's easier to remove the whole light unit to gain easy access to the rear but 15 min job :-)

And as above passed the MOT no problem

I had morette headlights on my bug when I first got her and fitted aftermarket HIDs to her with no problems. the ballest units sat in the engine bay quite happy.

Providing you have head lamp washers and self levelling headlamps, you shouldn't have any issue with MOT's. Some one somewhere will fail if both are not fitted, as it's a new requirement this year some testers are a bit lax on it. But it will happen!

Yeah the rumours are they are clamping down, but my beam pattern isn't scattered as morettes have the projector lens, also they are the white so dont look obvious.

It you drive like a dick, have bright blue hids or dont have a projector lens so it blinds over road users then you'll be pulled.
Mine passed the MOT but that doesn't guarantee others, my beam doesn't scatter and looks normal.
The ruling of auto levelling and headlight washers only applies if it's fitted to the car

Sorry to go off topic but how does a JDM Blobeye that comes standard with HIDS but with no projector lens, no auto leveling or headlight washers pass an MOT?

Me too but I have been told that morettes don't have hid lenses hence the mot failure later in the year , depends on your mot tester I guess . You must buy hid units if ya wanna go that route I was told

Look, can we get this out of the way?

Headlight washers and levellers are NOT a requirement, but the new regs say that with an HID light, IF headlight washers and levellers are fitted, they must work.

The word IF is the giveaway there

Because:

There is no requirement for a projector lens, just that the lens/light unit should be matched to the bulb in use.

And there is no legal requirement to HAVE headlight washers/levellers, but that IF they are fitted, they MUST WORK.

That's correct, but DON'T DO IT!

The H4 HID is the worst of all. You either end up with poor lights, or a decent dip beam and a worse main beam than halogen.

Do a few searches on here to see why.

Try some of the Halfords 120% uprated bulbs, or do what I did:

Ahh H4 HID's can be a totally different kettle of fish I didn't realise you were on about those .
You may have lot more probs with those as the beam totally different to projector H7's in bug style Moretts.

All the light in H4's has to use the same reflector in back of lamp and throws light everywhere I had a H4 HID kit in my GTiR and was a nightmare to align and would probably not go through the new MOT.
