Have been offered a Ecutek mapped ECU second hand normally ruin a GEMS but thinking Buy it and with the licence be saving a few quid. Especially as MOT's could be getting tougher. Would it just be plug and play for it too work. I know it will need mapping to my car spec, but wondering about the imobiliser or any other issues. It is off the same model as mine a V7 STi.

Not sure if that is the issue as when I had a clifford alarm fitted one key worked one did not. When I contacted the fitters they said to take the chip out of the non-working key as it was not needed. This was prior to fitting the GEMS ECU. Could it be the ECU needs matching to the pickup for the signal from the key and if so can this be done at the start of the mapping session rather than having to fit the ECU at a dealers get it sorted, switch back ECU's to drive to mapping session then swap again?

 

You would be better talking to your mapper but i am sure you could drive there with your old ecu and then get them to swap the ecu's over and then set it up.

Where is your original Bug STi Denso ECU ??

Much cheaper to Opensource map yuor original ECU.

Unless you take the EcuTeK ECU back to the original mapper as a new EcuTeK mapper can't see the original map and will have to start afresh (aside from paying for the licence)

It would be a start from scratch anyway as turbo, exhaust and fuel system are different from the spec when I bought the ECU. Still got the original ECU but when I bought this already Ecutek'd ECU open source was not about so this was the only route. I agree that open source would be cheaper but I understood that open source can have issues due to software compared to Ecutek that is well tried and tested. I know Steve Simpson does open source mapping and cannot fault the work he has done with my GEMS ECU. As I can go either way just getting a few questions answered prior to deciding which road I take.

Forget buying a second ECU......if you have the original and there's nothing exotic on the car I'd have your own ECU mapped, Bread and butter to a good OpenSource mapper.

Cheaper and you don't have the hassle (notmuch hassle really) of re-encoding the keys

Stick with the original ECU and get it open sourced mapped. No problem with either EcuTek software or opensource software, opensource is cheaper!

Steve and myself did the TT record breaking Subaru recently using my open source software and it broke the record. So it can't be that bad!

From a commercial use point of view not being able to recover an ecu after a programming failure and not being able to recode keys are a down point for OS imho.

As your happy with steves mapping on the car already give him a call and go with his advise.

I will always discuss with Steve my future plans as he has never let me down. I will always research things first to get a good perception of what needs to be done. Once the plan is in place then I e-mail Steve and go from there. Having moved Steve is not on my route, that said as the GMS ECU is my primary ECU I will always consult with him and get my GEMS mapped by Steve. The OS or EcuTek will be a standby & MOT ECU that I will deal with locally and when the time comes I will be looking to JGM! Having seen his work on other cars local to me.

 

To JGM. As posted I have a EcuTek ECU and my OE ECU the EcuTek ECU does not allow the engine to fire. Could this be due to the ECU needing to be matched to the imobiliser on my car? When I get round to sorting this what would you recommend OS or EcuTek?

 

yes it needs the keys recoding to the new ecu.
