can anyone confirm what is fully needed when converting a 5 speed box on a late classic to a 6 speed from a newage

Search is your friend but in short:

If you're swapping a UK six speed into a UK Classic then you just need the box, linkage and prop as a bare minimum.

The uk Box will match with the UK R160 Diff so there will be no need to swap diff and shafts.

The 5 speed clutch will work with a six speed box without issue.


Things get a little more complicated with an Import classic.

I think the best thing to do is for you to tell us whether your classic is a UK or JDM model and then we can advise accordingly.

Then you're in for a whole world of pain LOL

have you already purchased the 6 speed if so what parts have you purchased with it?

Your easiest option is to source an R160 3.9 rear diff as then you'll just need to change the diff. If you want to put on an R180 3.9 diff on then you'll need to swap shafts and hubs too and that can then bring rear brake issues.

 

Might also need to swap the rear shafts even if staying with a R160 diff I know I had to as the LSD/Helical diffs use different rear shafts!

I believe if you go R180 you'll need R180 rear hubs and brakes as well!

 

Is it easier going JDM - JDM?

As Daz has said.

Keep and use the box, linkage, cradle, prop, rear diff, rear shafts, rear hubs, discs and calipers.

 

If you have the whole car then use everything, box, linkage, cradle and mount, clutch and flywheel, slave cylinder, prop, rear diff, hubs, brakes and shafts.

That should then be a straight forward conversion.

 

As above and maybe also starter motor.

 

Sell the Classic and drive the JDM bug...........

my 2 cents:

you will need everything that is behind the engine! At least that is what I did and jad no issues. Rear sti brakes included!

 

what about front drive shafts and hubs or are they the same ?

 

Front shafts are the same and should fit. All the ones I have done have without issue.
