Has anyone had any major problems with miss spaced no. plates, i am not going to try and make B's out of 13 or anything, but something like'D4VE H' for example (not actually my plate by the way)by moving the V & E across. I was planning on standard lettering as to minimise the fuss. Ideas anyone??

Why don`t you just leave it alone and let the MP and RS crowd attract the attention of the Police?

 

unfortunately already got the plate and as standard doesn't mean anything apart from making the scooby look like its got a cheap private reg to hide the age!

 

It's illegal to mis-space the letters and numbers on your reg plate. However, like driving in excess of a posted speed limit, it only matters if you're caught. The police are now making a point of stopping people with mis-spaced plates - because they're harder for the automatic number plate recognition systems to read - so, if stopped, you can expect an automatic £20 or £30 fine (no points - yet!). Some people get away with it for years, others will get stopped the first time out - life's like that ....

From the DVLA's website:
"To mis-space or misrepresent your numbers in any way is an offence under the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 1971.

Such registration numbers may be taken away and you will not be entitled to any reimbursement of the monies or any other costs incurred in the purchase of the registration number. "

Don't do it! I've been stopped 3 times as my plate is slightly misspaced. They said that if they ever see it misspaced again they will confiscate it and you'll never see it again.
The legal plate was supposed to be - The letter, then the number, then a space and then your three letters.
Mine was - The letter, SPACE, then the number and three letters altogether. It must have been only 5 mm out - everything else was legal - the size of letters, numbers and the size of plate were all legal. But the plod said NO and that was it.

 

It's not big and it's not cool.

Number plates are there to identify your car, not to prove how big you are or how much cash you have.

If you still want to waste £30, give it to me and I'll go up the pub with it, rather than use it to pay the fine you'll get at some point.

Mine has letter/number/three letters - all pushed together in the centre of the plate - correct font and not trying to make it read something else - technically illegal but never had a second glance by plod in nine years with it on a VERY loud MY00 with STI5 rear wing, before that it was on a 206GTI, 306GTI, 306 S16, Astra GSI.

Just the luck of the draw I guess!

 

The law changes on 1st April 2001 - expect all those kiddies with fancy fonts and mis-placed digits to get fined on the spot, plod are going to get tough!!

The moral of the story is to buy a plate that works when its legal (like mine!)

Is there a minimum and maximum measurement for the spaces? Mine looks good anyhows but getting the ruler out is tempting.

 

I've had trouble.
Stopped on the M25 and told to change my plate and get a form stamped at my friendly MOT garage proving it had been done.
No fine. But still a hassle.
I suppose you could keep a legal plate in the boot and say you'll change it back, but thats still a hassle.
And do you really want to be getting stopped for such a trivial thing.

 

There is a BS spec or something for all the relevant bits - font, spacing, plate size etc. Not sure where you will find it cos I don't need to look at it - I know mine is not legal - but sure a DVLA/internet search will come up with the answers.

Went for a pint with a mate last nite, a friend of his only turned out to be a copper in my area, said if i get pulled round here he could sort the fine + producer out no probs!, swapped that for a 5 min drive in the car, not bad hey!, so here's to miss spaced no. plates!!! Cheers for all the replys!!!

 

I have been there A123-BCD changed to
A1-23BCD no producer just £30 to Derbyshire Constabulary. Threatened with a Q plate if caught again.

I had my plates made at GT-Grafix. They seem very profesional and competant.

They told me (for newish cars) that the space between all digits should be 11 mm, except between the group of numbers and the group of letters which should be 33 mm. An 11 mm boarder of plate is required around the outside of the letters & digits. There is 1 legal font. Any changes to this and the plate is illegal. If all these conditions are satisfied the plate is legal. There is no fixed legal size for a plate, it must just fulfil these requirements.

That's my understanding anyway
