Exclamation CLEANING TAILPIPE...????

I have a 4" bore rolled-in tailpipe, and the soot/muck doesn't come off at all easily on the rolled-in area (i.e. the cross-sectional bit facing straight out) -- if at all!

It's well and truly 'ingrained' and looks crap being black all the time.

Can anybody recommend any cleaners/degreasers where you wouldn't have to spend ages/tonnes of elbow grease to TRY! to clean it off?

Or are their any pro cleaning companies that could do it and maybe re-polish the whole tailpipe, etc.?

I just use wonder wheels on a cloth, also get inside the tailpipe and give that a clean too.

What have you tried? I find an autoglym metal polish works, or most kinds of metal polishes for that matter. Try on a small area first to check it doesn't leave scratch marks. Otherwise car polish seems to work too. I think most areas that don't clean with metal polish are probably too badly oxidised to bring up as new anyway.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have used Wonder Wheels and WD40, etc. - but it just don't do it!

bugeyejohn - yeah that is what I prob would have to resort to... but...

...JDM Stig - brill, that looks just the thing I need. Presumably it mildly cuts right through to the metal, right?

Smear autosol round the tip. leave for ten mins. Put some on a bit of wirewool or a scourer and rub it with a bit of elbow grease. Polish clean with a soft cloth and then keep on top of it regulary. Autosol shifts any exhaust deposits if you try hard enough!!!!!

Yeah, I think I'll buy a tube of Autosol too, so as to keep on top of it once it's had its 'deep clean' lol

LOL! Charming!

Seriously, I've tried most things and plenty of elbow grease, and nothing can cut through! So annoying.

Admittedly, haven't resorted to brillo pad or wet'n'dry yet...

As above, metal polish and very fine metal wire mesh (which you can normally buy in the same place). Does the job perfectly I have both in the garage. If you get really stuck let me know and I'll dig it out and find out the product name I use.
