Just wondering (due to losing 3rd gear completely)....
1) TY752VB5BA - good for what power level, please ?

Fitted as standard to my JDM MY98 WRX V-Limited.
This car is not an STi, but seems to be a halfway house between true WRX and true STi.

Do I fit the same gearbox @ AUD $3,000
or go for STi 6 Speed @ AUD $7,000

 

TY752 VB has the weaker casing than the TY754 VB
So if your box has gone I would go for a TY754 VB

TY752 well over 300hp and associated torque then it could go at any time.
However some do hold up over 300
TY754 up to more like 350, again how long is a piece of string. I know of one running 370

Make sure it is VB box as then it should match your rear diff.

Sti 6 speed well you can throw 600hp at that one. hence why it is so much more.

 

600 hp, that'll be a well built/engineered gearbox.
Pity the older ones couldn't take a bit more power.

So, if I upgrade the gearbox, what would be the next weak link in the drive-train-chain ?
Assuming the engine and clutch have been upgraded accordingly, of course.

 

half shafts. i sheared a rear one right off. six speed rear hubs and half shafts solved this. also had the added benefit of the nice gold rear brembos.

 

As big sinky says. If you upgrade all the drive train there will always be a weak point and it will be the shafts. Which is good, because that is what you want to break as opposed to a box or finishing your clutch. As shafts are cheaper and easier to replace.

A standard six speed box will take big power - nothing extra needed.
HOWEVER.
Where some expense comes in is. If the box is of any age, get it striped down and anything looking too worn replaced. Then you can throw 600 or whatever at it. It is worth that extra expense to make sure it is bullet proof. The syncros in the higher gears on a six speed are prone to be weaker. So expect to refresh these.

For a fit and foget option go 6 speed.
However on a VB the ratios between 1-5 are tight with a long sixth.
So obviuosly has a different feel to a five speed.

It all depends on what power you want to run. And what you use the car for?

 

Car is road registered, but is mainly for track days.

Power is 300 bhp ATW (at the wheels) , not sure what that would be at flywheel ???
Would be nice to know, btw.
Don't think the power will increase much with that engine, EJ20 re-bored to 2.2Litre.
And open block.
Might get a 2.5 Litre put in one day ??

 

Well if the power doesnt increase much. (seeing as you have an open block)
The far cheaper option is to find a TY754 VB box and go with that. There is a chance it might hold up. Although a 2.2 is going to produce more torque than 2.0 and that is what destroys boxes.

Do second hand PPG boxes in a TY754 casing ever come up for sale where you are?
As this would definately do the job and second hand may be cheaper than a six speed.

With a 2.5 you will need a six speed box. So if you are thing about that long term. Definately go for a six speed.
