Track Day Oil Temps - Is this normal?

Default Track Day Oil Temps - Is this normal?

Hi,

Went on an open pit lane track day at Silverstone last week.

Absolutely awesome day but I was only able to run 3 or 4 hard laps at a time because my oil temp was hitting 115f and I'd been advised to set the Defi to warn me when this temp was reached. Ideally I'd have liked to have stayed out longer but after a cool down lap I came in for 20 minutes or so to allow the car to cool down.

Is this normal?

I have a Hawkeye Type UK, remapped sensibly to circa 360bhp and it's not fitted with an oil cooler.

If so, what is the best way of improving engine cooling?

Did you play around with shifting 1000rpm lower etc in your laps to see if that would give you another lap or two?

Are you shaw thats 115f and not 115c? 115f is only 46c

Sounds fairly normal for a 2.5ltr dependant on how many beans you are giving it.

It's not a bad idea to come in or do a couple of cool down laps anyway.

Of course an oil cooler will *help*.

As already suggested you can try and lower your shift point.... no point in reving the **** off it for a public track day.

Depending upon where the temp. sender is located, 115c is quite normal. Assuming you're using a good quality full synthetic oil, that's well within it's capabilities. It was still wise however, to allow the oil to cool, for peace of mind.

As JohnD said, that's not too bad and where is your sender located? We always recommend using the sump as it's the least influenced by the cooling system, block, hot spots, etc. If you're going to be doing reguilar track days, we recommend going to a larger oil pan (like ours to bring the temps down some and help with keeping the oil condition in check). If even more power and lots of track days are in your future there is no substitution for a good quality oil cooler.

Hi John,

Not quite sure where the sender is located (have asked Chevron to confirm) but knowing that 115c is normal is very reassuring, as I became quite paranoid once the Defi started warning me, hence my decision to come in and let things cool down!

For info I'm using Motul 300v 15/50 Competition Racing oil as recommended by Iain Litchfield.

Yep Defis or the like are must.
As well as oil pressure and temp EGT and AFR are really useful
For a 2.5 on track. Baffled sump, Oil cooler, Return to sump catch can.
