Just changed the pads to some basic Mintex as I'm planning to upgrade in the near future, but my plans may be accelerated by the fact that one of the piston seals was split and the piston had seized. I've freed it but it is only a short term fix as the rust has set in and I had no replacement seal

The question is;

What brakes?

Options:

1. STI Brembos with some upgraded pads and discs - I reckon on circa £1k with PF discs and pads, but I'm not sure what other options are available

2. K-sport 330mm 8-pots plus bluestuff pads - circa £900

3. K-sport 356mm 8-pots plus bluestuff pads - circa £1K

These will be complimented by an STI Brembo rear set-up and I'll also need to factor in a repaint on the calipers to red to go with my current colour scheme plans.

Are there any other options in a similar price range (or less and I'm quite happy to use a good second hand set-up) and can anyone provide some feedback on any of the above set-ups.

It is going on a bug WRX aiming to be running about 350bhp with quite a bit of weight reduction thrown in for good measure

Il stick my 2 peneth in here lol.

I can supply full range of BLACK DIAMOND or EBC brakes both are good and can be supplied for either your current setup or the Brembo setup. Forum members get 15% discount on Black Diamond from me and 10% on ebc stuff. I personally run the BD FT pads and their 6 groove discs and there is a huge improvement over the standard setup (I run the Brembo setup) The black diamond range is very low dust also.

The link below shows some options i offer and i can recondition your current calipers also if thats something you may look at doing. With uprated discs and pads you would see improvements in your braking without such a huge expense. I also have braided hoses and stoppa's in stock also.

I can also supply K-Sport setups if this is what your after.

What calipers do you have at present?

Godspeed, (Ian Godney on here) can refurbish them and also sells a kit to allow them to take a 335mm two-pice disc. He also does stainless pistons.......

Drop him a PM and ask, can't hurt.

Currently running 4-pots with dBA discs, so looking for something bigger. I don't like his 335mm kits as it looks like it's bodged together (I know it isn't) and TBH by time I refurb the calipers and fit this kit that's over half the cost of something bigger. My discs are in good nick and even needing a refurb I can recover something on the calipers so it doesn't make sense to me

why not simply strip the pistons out of the caluipers, polish them up, fit a new seal kit and get some more life out of them.........

I'd planned an upgrade this year anyway, and work is hectic at the moment so I haven't got the time to do a job twice hence why straight for the upgrade

The Brembo & PF combo is a good set up but expensive, recently purchased the floating rotor set up & DS 2500 &it came to about £900

Hi spec could be worth a look, i believe the sell willwood stuff too.

Ouch!!!

£904 is the best price I've had for 330mm k-sports with bluestuff pads so the Brembo option doesn't seem so good anymore

The hi-spec stuff looks good but I've heard mixed reviews on them recently. I remember they used to be big 15-20 years ago when I was working on early Fords, but they seem to get lost in the noise these days

You can have the Gold Brembos off my 07 Sti complete with pads and 330mm discs with a good amount of life left in em for £550 if that's any good to you? You could upgrade to PF discs and pads when you get more dough. This set up would be a big improvement on the WRX brakes though. I found them to be very good for fast road use: nice bite, powerful and I never got them to fade on the road. Look nice too!

Of course, the brakes you really want are AP 6 pots (the daddies) BUT 2.2k if you please..... I know from experience!!

I've just priced up the PF stuff and at £900 just for discs and pads I think I'll go with the K-sport option

NS04, thanks for the offer, tempting as it is but the 07 STI will have a different PCD so I'll need to either re-drill or replace the discs unless they already have a second setting of holes drilled

The PF discs should be drilled with both PCD's so should fit straight on

current RRP's for the STi fit Performance Friction front discs are £742.66inc./pair and z-rated pads are £99.36inc. so not sure why you have £900??

the quality of the pads and particuarly the rotors bears no relation at all to some of the cheaper brake kits IMO.....

Just based upon a search and the best prices I could find, but what's £50 between like-minded petrol heads

Still, it's dearer than a K-sport set-up if I need the calipers and brake lines too

I have a Hawk eye , T25, and upgraded my fronts from the black Brembos , to Alcons 6 pots, and there floating discs.
Worth every penny , had fitted and supplied by Iain [ litchfield] and at the time cheapest price around , cheaper than teh A.P set up . but still and expensive option.

I have the k-sport 8 pot 356mm c/w ds2500 pads on my wr1

Had them fitted for about 10 months now and been very impressed with them.

Upgraded my front discs via Ian @ Godspeed, they are alloy bell, while i was at it i got hel braided lines upgraded my fluid and fitted Carbone Lorraine RC6's to the front and ferodo ds2500 to the rear, my experience with the above is i can fault them as a daily driver, from cold the work well and strong enough for some late braking at trackdays.

Maybe a Stoptech 328 BBK.
Fits behind WRX wheels (if you are planning on running a dedicated winter wheel set for example) and are available in Red, so they go with your colour scheme.

Stoptech, like D2 and some others have no dust seals so need regular rebuilds.

The Stoptech set with the ST40 and ST60 calipers have seals.
Only the ST60R has not got them (but is specifically aimed at track use)

I also think the price is on the high side considering the options one has nowadays.
4 years ago (when i bought them) they were one of the few BBK's available that fitted behind OEM WRX wheels, and seeing I had 3 sets of those the more expensive Stoptechs worked out cheaper then even 2nd hand Brembo's, as I did not have to buy 3 sets of wheels.

Also, like Alyn says, the quality is absolutely spot on, and there are loads of pads available for them.

On the other hand, with the likes of KSport nowadays it IS hard to justify the extra expense, as they provide 90% of Stoptech quality for 60% of the price.

@ DSL...

Totally agree with the sentiment, and if I wasn't forking out for a respray I'd be looking at APs or something like the Stoptechs.

My only area of concern would be the D2s and some others that don't have the dust seals as I'd to have to introduce a caliper rebuild every year

You never know, my numbers may come up and I may be able to afford some stoptechs as they do look a better overall package than the K-sports or Brembos.

Depends on the price of the BREMBO'S you drop on. I got a full set for £500 a think i paid which was a bargain. Powdercoated NEON orange now and not to everybodies taste but i like them lol.

The seals/dust covers as long as in good condition can be cleaned and re used and once painted or powder coated you got a bargain setup.

I'd avoid the Brembo's, not because they are not good, but because of wheel fitments issues. I know some people say "I have 18's so clearance is not a problem". Well it still can be as Brembo's are a bit fussy even on 18's. And then if you want a spare set of wheels, more problems with fitting.

There are a set of AP's for around 900 quid in the for sale section.

I agree here also,i have 18's my spare doesnt fit over my brembo's as my 5th wheel is a rear offset, never tried the space saver but cant imagine it would fit either.i have a pump in the car
