I just booked a service this Friday at my local Subaru garage....
MY01 10000 miles 6 month service.
I asked which oil they we're going to use.
Horror upon horrors he told me Shell helix ultra 0W-40!!!
As you can guess I wasn't pleased!!!

I explained my point (0W WAY TOO THIN!)
He replied that he agreed with me if my car was pre 97....
Why?
Because he quotes "before 97 they all had hydrolic tappets and
and after they didn't!"

Does he have a point or is he talking sheeeet?

Plums.

Subaru have not yet approved 0W-40 as confirmed by Mobil.

"If the dealer is supplied by Mobil then he will indeed be getting Mobil 1
5W-40 from us. We supply this grade to dealerships as Subaru have not yet
conducted tests with Mobil 1 0W-40 to give their approval.

Unfortunately we do not supply this grade retail in the UK so you would
have to obtain oil for top-up from your dealer while the vehicle is under
warranty. Out of warranty you should be able to use Mobil 1 0W-40 which is
, of course, readily available through Halfords, Esso Service Stations &
other specialist automotive retailers.

I know this is Mobil not Shell but the same applies. Tell your dealer to check the handbook or even ring IM and complain to them. From reading other posts there seem to be some dealers who, for some reason are not using the correct oil.

As I understand it, only 5W30 and 10W40 are approved by IM. There was a thread on this in the middle of last month (I spoke to IM about it). But, as usual, the search is down.....

CD Brammall of Cheltenham, tell me they use Castrol GTX!!!
Does anyone have a comment on this, as I have a 45K service due in 3 weeks...ouch! Should I insist on Mobil 1 or similar?

Just to clarify the shell ultra provided by my Subaru garage
is indeed 0W-40 says so on the bottle!!!!

But as I understand it it's only supplied to garages......

I would like to know if there's any truth in the hydrolic tappets story? (read my firt message.)

Thumbs down

I was offered the same thin stuff a couple of years ago, I declined. When I enquired about it they said "don't worry, it's got a 3 year warranty".

Oh that's OK then!!!!!

Question

My local dealer did a first service on my UK STi7 recently, and the oil was charged at £19-74 including VAT (only specified by part number). The total charge for the service (parts only) was £32-40 (including filter and washer).

This seems very cheap oil for a high spec engine. I used to use Mobil 1 Motorsport (10W50 I think) in my last car (Sierra Cosworth, Stage 1 engine circa 260hp) which I believe helped it keep going past 125k miles (that I know of!!) without any engine work...still going now as I sold it to my brother to buy the STi!

What sort of oil would have been used for this money?

Scott
