Hi there I'm new to the site and not the most technical person,just wondering with all the diff expressions people use are the block and both
End the same? I'm asking because I'm looking at buying a impreza but advertised with bottom end gone and was looking for replacement but keep finding people selling 'blocks',any help would be seriously welcomed or other alternative for repair,repairers etc cheers

 

Yes mate the block and bottom end are the same thing
Its the most common failure point on a scoob really imho

 

Cheers,now I know there are a few engines for imprezas so what's the easiest wayto know the the block I wanna buy will fit and components?in the car I'm looking at it's cracked so leaking oil and water but as far as I know the internals are ok,once again cheers for fast response :-D

 

No worries mate,id personally buy one complete ie-block with heads on it and drop the ancillaries off your current engine on to it and drop it back in.
As long as the engine brought is out of a car around the same age/spec as yours then it will all bolt on no problem.

 

I'm wondering whether it would be wise to buy a car model that you don't know much about with a blown engine.
What assurances do you have that the turbo, transmission and suspension are up to scratch?

I would recommend that you get a running car and have someone knowledgeable with Subarus to check it out for you as well before buying.

 

You have to be sure that if you're going to buy a short block it's both right for the purpose and in good order. This forum is littered with those who tried to save and ended up spending big style. It's possible to bolt any head onto any block, but that doesn't make it right!

 

Different year, type block head combinations along with different head gasket combos will net very different compression ratios resulting in very different performing engines. As Alan says, you need to be sure you get the correct/fit for purpose block. Or make sure you talk to one of the engine builders that knows their shizzle.
