hi

can someone please tell me the following 2 things?

1) how to check the gearbox oil (i know it has its own dipstick but 2 people have told me i need to check the level whilst the car is running???)

2) what type of oil i need to put in it? i.e. is there anything specific (and dont say gearbox oil )

the gearbox oil level should be checked via the dipstick located on the O/S rear of the engine bay (near the turbo) with the engine switched OFF, it's automatic gearboxes that are checked with the enine running not manuals.

You'll get plenty of advice on which oil is better this is mainly down to brand loyalty the truth is any quaility 75w90 GL5 spec gear oil will be fine for normal use expect to pay around £10-£12 per litre, if the car is tuned or used on the track then it is probably wise to use a fully synthetic oil, Silkolene syn 5 or Motul gear 300 are good choices at around £15-£18 per litre.
The gearbox holds 3.5 litres.

It's worth noting that if it has a DCCD it can be very fussy about oil. If it has a DCCD, I'd use the Motul GEar 300 or Millers CRX NT. Otherwise any other of the good 75w-90 oils are fine.

I was advised by opie to use £45 millers in mine & the box is worse than before!

 

Most unusual! Millers is normally a sure thing.

Is it the same oil used in the diff also? How much does that hold? Had trouble selecting 2nd and 3rd at times recently so thinking of trying an oil change

 

Depending on the gearbox and diff, the same oil can often be used

 

does the front diff/gearbox etc not all get filled up through the same hole?
Id always thought it was a case of draining the front, refilling through the dipstick hole....and then the usual level fill plug on the rear diff? Or is there something else as well that iv missed?

 

im new on here im fittin new gearbox, clutch, and flywheel but spigot bearing i ordered is out of stock need new one fast delivery also gear oil if i can get both from same place fast delivery would be great anyone no where is best as i new scooby owner

How is it worse? I got mine serviced last year by a Subaru dealer and the gears are always very stiff to move for until warmed up. I can only assume they have put the wrong oil in which is terrible considering its from a dealer.
